[identity profile] feelslike-2day.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
I'm posting this for a friend- who's doing a speech for school on her name -Jennifer.

Just wondering how many people here are named Jennifer (or Jenifer/Jennipher/Jenniffer/Gennifer...whatever), or have a child named Jennifer.

If you were named jennifer, why were you named that?

If you named your child Jennifer, why did you choose that name?

Have you ever had another Jennifer in your class at school? If yes, how many?

How do you feel about being named /having named your child Jennifer?

If you are called something other than Jennifer what is it?

thanks so much in advance, I'm so curious to see the answers.

My parents thought it was pretty (which it is) and original (which it is not - though in the 70s you can't blame them for not knowing that)

In elementary there were 6 of us out of ~60 kids total in my grade. So approximately 1 of every 5 girls were named Jennifer.

How do you feel about being named /having named your child Jennifer?
I would have preferred having a name of my own. My friends mostly had pretty unique names and never seemed worse off for it. I, on the other hand, had to leave my last name in phone messages for my best friend.

If you are called something other than Jennifer what is it?
I go by Jen and Jo. J.O. are my initials. It came from elementary when there were six of us and we eventually became Jenny, Jen, Jenna, Jennifer, Jem, and Jo.

I'm not a Jennifer, but I think I should have been. For as long as I can remember, if I've ever been called a wrong, random name, it has been Jennifer. When corrected, the person calling me Jennifer has always said, "Sorry. You look like a Jennifer to me."

Naah, I definitely don't look like a Jen. I look more like a Kim. Lol

I've been mistaken for a Jennifer sooo many times, and that's just for being a Jessica in Italy, at a time when the name wasn't much too heard of :/

Ditto! I don't think it's just in Italy. I'm a Jessica in Alaska, and it happens all the time. One lady apologized, laughed at herself, and said they don't even sound alike. I told her meh, they're both three syllables, start with J and from the 80's. Whattya gonna do?

If you were named jennifer, why were you named that? My mom knew ONE Jennifer when she was growing up in the 50s/60s and always liked the name. And my dad wouldn't let her name me Javelyn (whew!) which was her first choice, so they settled on Jennifer. This was in 1978, riiiight when it started to explode.

Have you ever had another Jennifer in your class at school? If yes, how many? Always at least one, sometimes as many as 4 others.

How do you feel about being named /having named your child Jennifer? It bothered me a bit in my preteen years, but not enough to want to do anything about it. It did make me want to make sure my kids have names that are less common (but not 'weird'- I named my son Holden for example).

If you are called something other than Jennifer what is it? Most friends and family call me Jen or Jenny. My mom and sisters and my best friend call me Ginger or Nej (rhymes with edge. I have a weird family).

I don't even remember how Ginger started, and neither does my mom. She just started calling me that when I was around 11 or 12 and it stuck.

Nej (and Nejjy or Nedgy) came about because when my little nephew tried to say Jenny when he learned to talk, he mixed up the N and J sounds and that just stuck, too. He calls me Aunt Jenny now that he's 9, but everyone else still calls me Nej, haha.

I am a Jennifer. I have hated my name my whole life. As a child I thought Jennifer was such a baby name and would ask people what my new name will be when I grow up.

When I asked my mother why she named me Jennifer she said she just like the name and had it picked out for years.

My classrooms growing up were full of Jennifers. It was a terrible feeling. To make matters worse, it is also very similar to Jessica and people can't seem to differentiate between the two. I hate being called Jessica even more than I dislike my name.

As a Stacy, I feel your pain about people always confusing your name. I've been called Tracy and Stephanie more times than I can count, and it's not fun!

Ditto for me, as a Melissa. I'm ALWAYS called Michelle. Always.

If you were named jennifer, why were you named that? My mom named me Jennifer because she heard someone at the hospital call their daughter by the name and so she liked it.
