So I was watching the Olympics the other day, and there was a medley event happening in the pool. My reaction was something like, "Medley, I like that word. Hmm, that could almost be a cute name for a girl."

The general sound actually seems like it fits in with some of the more popular names these days, so I'm almost surprised I haven't heard it used yet.

It has a nice enough meaning (in the musical sense), and it definitely strikes me as a word name that could sound completely normal in the future if it were used more frequently. (FYI, it's never been in the top 1,000 according to SSA records.)

I doubt I'd ever seriously consider using it, but it seems like it has potential. What do you think?

I think you're right, considering the popularity of Hailey and Hadley.

I don't like it myself, though.

*I just realized something else...Medley may sound too much like 'madly'.

I know the feeling, I've thought about it once too :P
I think it has potential but stays there.
Being too similar to Melody and other names (Hadley, ecc) it might not work too well.

As a middle name, hell yeah!

Reminds me of the "vegetable medley" we used to get at lunch in high school.

I can't get behind it as it something my (maiden) last name has often been mispronounced as.

I agree, it's an awesome name, and I can totally see that catching on, especially when this emo music generation gets a few years older!!

It'll probably take off when people finally get tired of Cadence and need a new "unique" name-sounding musical word.

I can see siblings Medley and Beckon.

I could definitely see somebody using it. But I don't think that I like it. It may just be one of those words that should stay a word.

The musical sense is usually applied to terrible compilations or muzak (e.g. Handel's Xmas Medley) so I regard the word negatively in this respect.

Apart from that, who'd want to be named after a mixture of stuff in general, the thesaurus gives alteratives such as hodge-podge or miscellany?

Sounding nice isn't enough. Clitoris sounds pretty too.

I think it could be confused for Melody.

when talking about musical names, people are going to go for melody before medley because of the frequency of use musically.
