(no subject)

So when i was little i went through different stages when i wanted to change my name.
For a really long time i wanted it to be

Consuelo

Joking around with my fiance when i was pregnant before we found out the sex i offered this name and he shot it down SO HARD.
"HELL NO!" while making gagging noises.

Is it TOO ethnic?
If it makes any difference i'm from Hispanic decent.

I don't think it's THAT awful. I mean it's not Zuma,Harlow,Etc....

I'd say it's close to being as bad as Zuma, Harlow, etc. It's definitely not a name that grows up well, OR that sounds at all "cute" on a child, so I don't see the appeal at all.

I like it better as a middle name, it makes a nice bridge.

I don't see what's so bad about it. I kind of like it. It would be weird if you had no Hispanic heritage, but since you do...

hey, I like harlow =[

So do I.

Sorry, but I hate Consuelo and like Harlow. :P

I kind of like Consuelo actually. Considering you're from Hispanic descent, I don't think it's too ethnic at all.

Just for the record, I like Harlow too ;)

I actually kinda like the sound, but it would be too ethnic for me to use as I am 100% European decent. Ever since taking Spanish in 8th grade though I have loved several names that are Latino origins... (Luisa being the one I love the most).

[identity profile] twitchywoman.livejournal.com 2008-08-25 09:52 am (UTC)(link)
that should say "that are of Latino origins"

Consuela is better imo.

[identity profile] th3-unicorn.livejournal.com 2008-08-25 11:47 am (UTC)(link)
It is quite ethnic, yes, but since she DOES have hispanic heritage, I don't see why not!

It would be weird if she didn't, causing confusion, but I think it's totally fine in your case!

You mean, in the US, people approach them in Spanish?
And think they're illegal because of their last name?
I'm quite suprised that mentality is still going around..

Out of the five of us, three of whom live in Spain, I am the only one with a traditionally long, scary Spanish name. I used to hate it; people would assume I spoke Spanish, I get Spanish mail, telemarketers call me in Spanish... Some even got angry at me because they thought I was pretending I didn't speak Spanish, which I now find hilarious. As an adult, I think I would have been resentful had my parents given me an "American" name instead of a Spanish one. I don't give a shit if total strangers are going to give me trouble due to my name; that's their problem, not mine. People are always going to find a way to be stupid about something.

And besides, if people are going to be shitheads because you have a Spanish name, then are those really the type of people you want to be associating with? The answer is not trying to hide your heritage; the answer is saying, "Racists aren't my bag, adios".

How it is it "too ethnic" if you are Hispanic? Don't shove all names that aren't European into some "ethnic" category; your heritage is just as normal as anybody else's.

In any case -- I think Consuelo is a horrible name. Although it translates into "consolation" or something along that line, "suelo" itself means "floor" and always conjures images of your stereotypical overweight Latina maid you see in all those novelas. It's also a religious name, which you may or may not be comfortable with.

Harlow is better than Consuelo. To me, at least. I don't really like it, it's just not my style. And yeah, it'd be too ethnic for me, and other mainly English people like me, but probably not for you.

it was my SIL's middle name and she hated it, even though it's after her grama. she dropped it when she got married, took her married name, and turned her maiden name to her middle name.

When I first moved into my dorm 10 years ago we had an imaginary lizard that lived in our room, named Consuelo.

I really like it. What about Consuela, to make it a little more feminine, if that's what your fiance wants?
