I can only think of the kid we called "gee-off", but as far as teasing goes, that's not horrifying or anything. anyway, the name spelled that way seems a little upper-class-english-twit, but I still kinda dig it.
I have a cousin named Geoffrey, and you'd think after 17 years I'd be clear on what I think of it, but I'm not haha. I think it sounds better than it looks. So it would follow that I think Jeffrey looks better, but I don't. It's a pretty decent name ... I guess since it would be kind of "off-limits" for me to use it, I've never really had to think about what I actually think about it, if that makes any sense?
I like the name Orion (more a guilty pleasure name for me than anything else), but I don't really think it goes with Geoffrey. Some combos I like with Geoffrey:
Geoffrey Alexander Geoffrey David Geoffrey Matthew Geoffrey Michael
Do not mind the name...HATE that spelling. I can't read it without thinking, "Gee-OFF-ree" :/ But I do not mind Jeffery. I like Orion but they don't seem to "go" together.
There's a Geoffrey that I know that I really do not like, but I can say this about it: I prefer that spelling a lot more than Jeffrey. I'm not too sure about Orion, but that's just so far from my style for boy names, it just sounds weird to me. I much prefer Orrin.
I can't really think of anything else, but if you like Orion, what about other names in mythology? Like Achilles and the such.
Geoffrey always makes me think of the giraffe of Toys R Us fame. I'm a total nerd, I know. And I can never imagine it being pronounced like people want it to be. Eh.
It's my brothers name, and i don't like it. It's also mis-spelled all the time, and he got a lot of geoffrey the giraffe and "gee-off" comments as a kid.
I also know someone named Geoffrey I only thought the spelling was just.. interesting when i first met him because I had never seen the spelling before. But i didnt think it was weird or anything. I totally didnt think of the toys r us thing until people here said it. so i dont think i would worry about it to much otherwise. I think i prefer this spelling over jeffrey. Im nota big fan of "j's" for some reason lol. I think Geoffry Orion is an ok combo. Geoffrey Michael for some reason popped into my head thought Michael isnt really on the same plane as Orion so i dunno how much you would like that.
Oh and alot of my friends would call him Gee-off like others have mentioned but it was like a fun friendly nickname kinda deal with us and him that he didn't mind. So i dont think its a bad thing. When he introduces himself he wont be "oh hi, im gee-off." so yeah lol just adding that in :)
this is by far the best comment i've gotten from this community to date... :)
orion has been at the top of my list for a while now, along with andromeda for a girl, and i'm coming to grips with the fact that they're very out there and that i might be growing out of my "oh my gosh, mythology names rock!" phase.
There's a saying that goes 'kill your babies'. We all have a tendency to cling on to pet ideas, and sometimes you have to let go. I think Andromeda is cool actually, but it's also self-indulgent.
That isn't to say you totally have to ditch mythology names, there are lots which are still 'popular' enough to be okay (i.e. not a burden for the name-bearer), like Pandora or Persephone.
And fashionable names are so weird nowadays it's quite radical to use old-fashioned 'boring' names like Geoffrey. It just happened to be one I really don't like. I do like Arthur, Percy and Basil, for example.
