Belladonna is a poisonous plant. The extracts can also be used for medicinal purposes when used in the right quantity. One medicine is called atropine and is used by optometrists/ophthalmologists to dilate the eyes for long periods of time (it lasts 7-10 days!) so it isn't what is used for the average eye exam.
The name belladonna literally means beautiful lady. Women back in the 16th-17th century (I think) used the herb for cosmetic purposes because they thought dilated big black shiny eyes were attractive. It does give you a kind of wide-eyed sex kitten look. It's a dangerous medicine though, and used at the wrong concentration, it will kill you.
I think it's a pretty silly name, honestly. Naming someone "pretty lady" is pretty condescending. (I don't care for Bella for the same reason.) The association with the poison/medicine really makes it inappropriate imo.
wow that's a lot of poisonis medicine info. I'll let my husband know. He'll probably be like good...then he won't have to kill an of dates when she gets older she can posion them herself. haha ;P
