What do people think of two parents with the same initial naming their kid the same initial as them?

I ask because I'm Megan, my Mum is Margaret and my Dad is Mike. We all have the same first and last initial which can get confusing when letters come addressed to MO and we don't know who it's for xD Now I go by MSO with my middle name in there (Sarah) to stop confusion lol.

I also think it's cool that Megan is a variation of Margaret, so it's like my Mum named me after her but not the same name xD

And how does everybody pronounce Megan? I pronounce it Mee-gan, but loads of people pronounce it May-gan. I've been told (by my father no less!) that May-gan is the correct pronounciation and that Mee-gan is the wrong one. When I asked him why they decided to pronounce it the "wrong" way he didn't have an answer xD

You'd think it would be an easy name to pronounce but EVERY teacher I had at school pronounced it May-gan. One teacher couldn't grasp the fact it was pronounced Mee-gan and called me wrong for the whole year x_x

I thought the same thing when I learned that (my middle name is Megan, my mother's is Margaret) XD

Yeah XD

Edit: And FTR, I pronounce my middle name may-gan so I can understand where people can mix that up.

One of my best friends is a Megan, and she hates both Mee-gan AND May-gan (and to be honest, so do I!).

We pronounce it Megg-an.

That's the pronunciation I'm familiar with too. I've only rarely heard May-gan, and I don't like it ... I do kind of like Mee-gan, but only because that's how Megan Follows pronounces it, and I love her.

Megan = 'MEG-an'. The only person I know who pronounces it 'MEE-gan' spells it 'Meighan' (or something like that), and the only person I know who pronounces it 'MAY-gan' spells it 'Maegan'.

Maybe it's a regional thing? I live in Canada.

I've always pronounced it Meg-an. Although May-gan and Meg-an sound very similar when I say them outloud.

Like someone else, it could be a geographical thing. Here in Australia, I've only every heard it pronounced Mee-gan, which is how I say it. But I notice on a lot of U.S. programs, it's may-gan or meg-an.

I guess with the way it's spelt, meg-an is the most appropriate, but I like the sound of Mee-gan better, probably because I'm used to it.

yep I'm in Australia too and it feels like about 90% of the time it's Mee-gan

Well, my name's Margaret and my mum's name is Mary. However, we have two different surnames, so we always know whose addressed to who. My father and brother, on the other hand, have the same initials (David and Douglas are their first names) which makes it harder to figure out.

Personally, I pronounced Megan as Meg-anne. I go by Meg (and have people constantly calling me Megan because of it) and so it seems weird to pronounce Meg- as Meeg or Mayg.

I think the same letter names is tacky, which is unfortunate because my significant other and I are both J's and coincidentally alot of my favorite names begin with J but I shy away from them because it seems so gimmicky.

I have heard both pronunciations, but Mee-gan is much more common where I live. I have also met one person ever who pronounced it like Meg-an. It's kind of funny that your dad was telling you that yours is pronounced wrongly :p

I don't like it when parents deliberately give their children the same initial as them. If I was in that situation, I would try to avoid it at all costs, but if I absolutely loved a name with the same initial far more than any other I suppose I'd still use it. I do know someone who completely restricted their name choices to start with M for all their kids, because both the parents started with M. That makes no sense to me--- you are already sharing the same last name as them.. what's so important about sharing the same first initial? You're not giving everyone in your family EXACTLY the same name, so why is the initial so important? I find it confusing and unnecesary. But oh well... each to their own lol

I pronounce it MEG-in. I would spell Mee-gan as Meagan.

I don't generally like the same initials thing, because it can get SO confusing. Same middle initials is one thing, and with just 3 people, it might not be so bad, but when you get to the fifth or sixth kid, it's ridiculous and has ceased to be cute a long time ago.

I'm Megan and I'll take either Meg-an or May-gan.

Mee-gan is an Australian pronounciation.

I pronounce it Meg-an!

My sister and I have the same initials as my parents - Kate and Joanna and Keith and June. They say they didn't do it intentionally - they just liked the names!

My husband, Daughter and I all have R names. Not intentional and I wanted to name her something different.

For me, it's neither Mee-gan, nor May-gan: it's Meh-gan. That's how my mom pronounces it, and I almost ended up named this.

I'm Megan M. and my daughter is Madelyn M. I never thought having the same initials would be an issue. Hubby doesn't have the same initial though. In my family, my dad is Mike and me and all my sisters are M's (Melissa, Megan, Marcy). I didn't continue the trend with my family though because my younger daughter is Caroline M.

I pronounce mine May-gan.

All the Megan/Meghans I know pronounce it just like it's spelled, with a "Meg". I've never met someone who pronounces it "Mee-gan". My name, Meaghan, is pronounced "May-gen", but I've never met anyone else who pronounces their name that way. Maybe it's partially an accent thing, I live in Michigan.

Incidentally, it's interesting to me that you mention the Megan/Margaret thing, because I've planned for a while now to name my first daughter Margaret, so it would be kind of after me but not quite the same, haha.

I think that it can happen accidentally, and that people tend to like names that sound similar to their own. My fiance is Alister, I'm Amy, and our choice for a daughter is Anthea. Not deliberate, but just that we both like A-names.

I'm in Australia, and it's always Mee-gan here.
