Alex, Alexis, etc

Been a few days since I did a poll here, so it's about time to post one again :)

I was looking of that list of baby names from the SSA website (http://www.ssa.gov/OACT/babynames/) and saw Alexis at number 11. Personally, I can't stand this name, but it got me thinking how weird it is that I like some of the Alex names and hate others. Just wanted to see what everyone else's opinion was. Here's the list of all the female babynames starting with "Alex" that were in the top 1000 names in 2004. For reference, I put the number it is on the list beside it.

For the record, Ethan won the boy's name poll, while Olivia barely won the girl's name poll.

Alexia is the complete inability to read at all usually after brain damage, dyslexia is having specific problems with recognising words when reading, which people seem to be born with.

I actually like Alexis better as a boys name. (Probably because the only girl Alexis I knew, I didn't like, but boy Alexis makes me think of Alexis Denisof from Buffy/Angel) But I don't think I'd name a child that (boy or girl).

"Alexus" just makes my eye twitch. Really not a fan of that spelling.

Alexa definetly. It's the only female 'alex' name i like. But i do like it a lot..
Probably because it doesnt sound much like ah-lix.. it's uh-lex-uh, so i dont see it as many of the other female versions of male names, (which i dislike immensly) like Erica for instance.

The thing about Alex is that there are sooo many characters in novels/TV characters with that name that it seems to have lost all personality it might have had. It's not a girl's name. It's not a boy's name. It's a tomboy name. It's a posh name (Alexandrina). With names like Catherine or Elizabeth you think regal, with names like Molly or Trixie you think cute, but with Alex? It just seems like a blah, default, boring name to me now because of the Alex explosion of the late 1990s.
