Okay, switching to a new book (for now): Here is a list of gems that can be used as names.

Amethyst - this is my birthstone, so I sort of like it as a name, but I'd be wary of using anything with the word 'meth' in it :-/

I love the name ruby for some reason, but i'd probably never use it. And Cinnabar sounds like a candy bar. :P

A lady on my FL has a daughter named Amethyst. She calls her Amie most of the time and I like Amie.

I knew an Emerald growing up and thought it was a weird name. Almost all of those names are terrible.

So many of these just sound like stripper names. The only one I kinda like is Sapphire, but I would never use it. Opal is my birthstone, and it's gorgeous but I hate it as a name.

I know a girl named Coral. Coral Brown. Yeah, I don't approve.

I love Ruby, I would love to use it, but by the time I have kids it's going to be so popular, it won't interest me then.

I do like Beryl, Coral, Garnet, Jacinth (I prefer the French spelling, Jacinthe. I knew a girl with that name in high school.), Pearl and Ruby.

I'm surprised at how many I like.

Jacinta (similar) and Jasper are on my list. As for the others...meh, I kinda like:

Garnet - but only on a boy
Mica - also for a boy, I like this as Micah but that's not the same thing clearly
Ruby - quite like, as long as the kid doesn't have red hair!
Jade - is acceptable, but somewhat too typical?

The only others that even WORK as names to me would be Amber, though I hate it, same with Crystal and Pearl. Ugh.

i have been so torn about this! my guy and i both have lots of red hair in our families (i have strawberry blonde hair, and he has some auburn hints in his goatee) and this is our number one name. hmph.
