I was just poking around a friend's blog and I came across this list:
Things I Do Not Particularly Like But Would Consider Naming My Children

1. Windex
2. Chevrolet
3. Pneumonia
4. Cleveland
5. Diesel
6. NASA*
7. TJ Maxx
8. Chlamydia

* This doesn't fit. I really do like NASA.

What words do you DISLIKE that you think make good names? No fair using already-established word names like Mercedes (I know, I know: the name came first). These need to be primarily non-name words, and they need to be words that you dislike, or words that mean things that you dislike. Bonus points for definitions.

Chlamydia is a lovely word. Others on my list:
Tachycardia (f) (rapidity of heart rate)
Cuckold (m) (a man who has been cheated on)
Cacophony (f) (a bad noise)
Hymenal (f) (relating to hymens)
Imbroglio (m) (a hubbub)
Chaos (f) (unpredictability/a state of confusion)
Treachery (f) (betrayal)
Diarrhoeal (f) (relating to diarrhea) I feel like the "o" of the British spelling makes it nicer as a name, but grosser as a word. I also feel that the "o" in "foetus" is disgusting. Well this list has sort of gone off the tracks...

PS: Folks, you would not actually name a child these things. They're terrible words that sound like names.

It's actually foetus, and I prefer it that way. :)

I like some 'word' names (or occupation names really, like Carver) but I would not ever consider any of the words you listed as names, nor would I consider any words I disliked as names. What they mean puts me off, and I wouldn't subject my child to that sort of teasing.

I do like the sound of Cacophony, but then I like the word too, however it's not really a name - a guilty pleasure name at most. I like Diesel as a name, though, and Cleveland could work.

Well, I'm Aussie and I've always spelt it with an O, so without it looks weird. :)

I don't really see how you could dislike a word but like it as a name.

I guess the 'make good names' part threw me off.

Perhaps words that would be interesting as names in a book? Like in some dystopian futuristic society?
Oooh.. there's one "Dystopia"

There was a boy who had a crush on me in 8th grade that confided in me that he wanted to name his daughter Anorexia. I believe I may have mentioned it here before. It always stuck with me. *shudder*

My thoughts on noun-names:
I hate rainy days, but I love the name Raine.
I love the summer and sunny days, but I hate Summer and Sunny as names.
My favorite flowers are roses, though I hate the name Rose.
Immolate means to murder someone by burning them, but I think it's got a pretty ring to it, and I am petrified of fire.

I met someone named Angina. Like the heart problem. I had to go into my office and laugh until I cried.

I think the word Cancer sounds really pretty if you totally disregard the illness. I have always thought that it would make a nice name, but I've never told anyone since it seems so "wrong". Thanks for letting me share!
