I love the name Nole/Noel for a boy but i'm trying to figure out the correct spelling. Wdyt of the name itself also? Any nicknames you can think of? I personally like the spelling Nole better because to me Noel is too much like Noel (No-Elle for a girl) What middle name would sound good with Nole/Noel?

Also wdyt of the names Emmolyn/Emmalyn (Emma-lin) and Adalyn (Ad-a-lin) for girls?

And one more, do you think giving your child a kinda "out there" name for a middle name is just as bad as giving them a weird name as a first name?

i dont mind noel. i have been pondering nolan with noel as a nickname.

i like emmalyn, though i would probably spell it emmeline or something. i am not fond of adalyn, perhaps adeline? i like the line pronunciation better than the lyn pronunciation. but my name is caroline and it drives me INSANE when people call me "carolyn" so thats probably just me.

i think middle names are free reign, you can use just about anything, imo.

I love it, but it should definitely be spelled Noel. It's an alternative pronunciation of the same name, not a different name, and Nole looks made-up and really weird.

Emmalyn and Adalyn both look incredibly trendy. Ad- names like Addison, Adeline, Adelaide, etc. are very popular right now, and adding a -lyn on the end of it fits right in with the trend of Madelyn, Katelyn, Gracelyn, etc. Same with Emmalyn, since Emma is just as popular. If you MUST use Emmalyn, spell it Emmaline, which is a slightly less trendy/more grown-up looking spelling of the name.

I don't think it's just as bad as giving them a weird name as a first name. There are a few names that I might use as middles because I LOVE them but I'm not so sure how well they will work on a child in practice (Harriet, for example, which is my absolute favorite for a girl). I dislike the idea of giving a child a weird middle name just for the sake of doing it -- Danger, for example, because it's really tacky and the humor is lost after the first time it's said. Imagine 87 years of saying, "Yeah, Danger is my middle name. No, really, look at my birth certificate!" But if the name means a lot to you and it's too "out there" to use as a first name, I think a middle name is a great place for it.

I think you have more freedom for middle names, but not absolute, but I don't know where I would draw the line.

I like Noel, but I think he'd get confused for a girl a lot. It works really well as a middle for a lot of names though. I think the name Nole is usually pronounced no-lay, so it's kind of a different name entirely. Emmolyn, Emmalyn, and Adalyn are all awful IMO. Don't put your kid in a situation in which his/her name is constantly misspelled is a good rule of thumb. I much prefer Emma and Ada. Emma is pretty common, but I think it would be just as bad if not worse to be an Emmolyn/Emmalyn in a class full of Emmas than to be one of the Emmas.

I think you can do whatever you want for middle names, to an extent. People usually ask for the middle initial at most. Just make sure the initials don't spell anything bad. Also, I think it's good to have some contrast in case your kid dislikes his/her first name. IE, if your kid has a really common first name he/she could go by a less common middle name, and if the first name is kind of out there, he/she could have a "normal" middle to fall back on.

I know the "correct" way is Noel (and that's how I voted).

However, when I was younger my Dad had a friend named Noel and I always pictured it spelled "Noll". I still don't mind Noll as a spelling, but I don't like Nole at all. It reminds me of various types of vermin: moles, voles, etc..

If I had to choose, I prefer Emmalyn. Although I would think Emmaline would be a viable spelling, too. After all, no one pronounces "Katherine" with a long "i" sound...

As for middle names, I don't understand why people here get so worked up about them. I don't think I knew anyone's middle name (except for my family) growing up, and certainly don't recall anyone being made fun of for their middle names...

If I saw Noel, I would read it as No-elle unless I was corrected. But I don't care for the name anyway.

I like the sound of Emmalyn, but I don't really like the way it looks any way you could spell it, Emma- or Emme- or Emmo-, -line or -lyn. It just doesn't look right no matter which combination you use.

And I definitely don't think a weird middle name is as bad as a weird first name. I've known lots of people with weird middle names but they're usually just reluctant to tell anyone what it is.

Nole, for me, is Novak Djokovic's nickname and is pronounced 'know-leh'. So Noel, definitely.

I definitely think giving a kid a weird middle name is better than a weird first name. I have a really weird middle name and it never bothered me too much. As long as your first name is normal people think it's kind of cool if your middle name is odd.

Noel. It's the same as the name Joel. Joel = JOLE, Joelle = jo-ELLE. Noel = NOLE, Noelle = no-ELLE.

I would think that an "out there" middle name is probably more okay than one for the first name. Since they're hardly ever used.

I'm suprised so many people like noel as is Merry Xmas. I much prefer Nole and really like the name actually.

Of the girls names I like Adalyn very much. Emmalyn for some reason screams grandma to me, not sure why.

In terms of "out there" names I'm very much pro-"out there" and I don't believe it's bad to name a child uniquely. Personally I'd rather be named something unique then be one of 7 Jennifers, Madisons, Melissas etc etc in every class for the rest of my life.

I know Noel as an old man's name, and Noelle as a name that I've never ever heard here in Australia, but seems very common on these sorts of US name forums.

So it must be one of those names that is very different here than in the USA. I know so many old men called Noel (pronounced Nole), and absolutely no females called Noel or Noelle. This seems very different from other people's comments though.

I am not a fan of Emmalyn or Adalyn, but I totally think they would be so much nicer as Emmaline and Adeline. They look sweet and French and more timeless this way.
