Since I finally now learned how to make polls people can vote in, I've decided to try it out. I've always wondered which spelling was prefered for the name Caitlin. I wouldn't use that for my child, simply because I'm not big on popular names, but out of curiosity...

Caitlin is the Irish version of Kathleen, and I've heard that technically it's supposed to be pronounced either just like Kathleen, or like kawt-leen. I think it's just pronounced how it looks here in America.

I had read that Caitlin and Katelynn were two different names because of this. Caitlin is supposed to be a traditional Irish/Gaelic name, and Katelynn (or Katelyn) is supposed to be an American combination name, combining Kate and Lynn (or Lyn).

I believe this is technically right.

But at the same time, sometimes names become americanized, and that's ok. It's like Genevieve for example. There's just two perfectly legitimate ways to pronounce that now.

My god-father is from Ireland and he pronounces it Kawtch-lean.
