[identity profile] nikkabee.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
Good Afternoon Everyone!

My lovely husband and I just got the exciting news we will be expecting in January...time to start seriously considering names...

Boys:
Cohen Nash
Hudson
Reynolds
Maddox

Girls:
Matilda Ryan
Marley Ryan
Madeline
Evie

I'm struggling with middle names, if you can't tell. I'm debating using Olive, after Abigail Breslin's character in 'Little Miss Sunshine' as a middle name for Evie...Evie Olive. Not too sure how it sounds...

Suggestions? Comments? Hate mail?

A Cohen is someone of great importance and reverence in the Jewish religion. It is something that is passed down throughout the family line. A Cohen is a priest and like you read, a descendant from Aaron. Its like naming your kid Pope... sorta.
This is something that is very important in our religion. Cohens or Kohens must be present to read certain parts of the Torah or other holy scriptures and must be present at certain milestones in one's life like a naming ceremony or wedding and must not EVER enter a cemetery or morgue or anywhere there is a dead body unless a parent, child, wife, or sibling dies.

This is a name that could warrant unneeded questions and harassment from anyone who is in the know. So something else to think about.

So I gather by your lack of information and your level of naivete and ignorance that you yourself are not Jewish. If you still wish to consider this as a name, then fine. Do as you like. At least now you have some sort of idea that its not just a surname or something cutesie you heard on a teenage soap opera. This is something that is very important and special to some people- especially myself who comes from a line of kohenim.

You'd better tell that to the hundreds/thousands of parents who named their babies Cohen last year. Like it or not, it's shooting up in popularity. And just because someone isn't acquainted with all the details of your religion, doesn't mean you have to be patronizing.

Woah, that was a little bit harsh. The fact of the matter is that names that had/have religious meaning are used often and I'm sure that the intention is not to *offend* anyone. It is your choice to be/not be offended by something. I am Christian, but an not offended when someone names their child Jesus or anything else for that matter, good or bad connotation.

Patronizing, sure. But I don't see that as being harsh.
Her kid is going to be asked over and over again if he's Jewish if she chooses that name.

I don't really see that as being a problem. I mean if someone asks him if he is Jewish all he has to say is "no" and it is over. Cohen is not just a Jewish name why would anyone care if someone uses it?

cohen IS a jewish last name, but i wouldn't assume someone was jewish just because their first name was cohen. to me, that's completely different. most people have first names with origins that have nothing to do with their ethnicities, religions, etc.

since every other response I can come up with seems to come out negative (even though I'm not trying to be that way) I'm just going to have to second this one.

thanks for voicing my feeling in a nicer way than I can manage tonight! :)

i think you're taking things a BIT too seriously. yes, maybe a cohen is important to your religion, but you have to also realize that it IS a legit name. people could easily say the same about someone naming their child "deacon" or "alla". sure, maybe you wouldn't do the same thing. certain names just happen to also hold religious importance and that shouldn't offend anyone because, well, it's not offensive. it's just a fact--unfortunate to some, but still there.
