I'm not pregnant, and I probably won't be for some time yet. However, I love names, and I have always had a slight obsession on that front.

My name is Jessica Blanche, a name which my parents chose because they felt 'Jessica' was the most un-spectacular and fitting in-est name they could find. Not that I'm bitter or anything ;-).

Anyway, my favourite name lists - what do you think?

When I read the first part of your post, I became terrified you were then going to want to subject your poor future children with names like "Madylynnnzy'einy". Then I clicked on the cut, and was saved!

I love all of your favorites - although I wouldn't name a boy Ashley, that's just asking for teasing. I do have a soft spot for it as a boy's name, though.

I applaud you!

Alot of them make me think old lady or old man, and yea I know that you are an adult for much longer than you are a kid, those names just dont appeal to me as much.

I like the names Laura, Andrew and Richard. Nice names overall but I wouldn't use them.

Vera looks incomplete to me, like a nickname for Veronica or something.. Also it is a Spanish surname. I am not really into surnames as names.

Hi :)
My parents did that too, by accident. Given name is a lame overused 80s name. Then to make it worse my younger brother's name is an underused classic, and a family name. Goddamn it why did the non onomast kid get the best name!

You have awesome taste, all really charming, classic names. Which is very fashionable right now so they will fit in with their school friends. Some of them are getting pretty common though. There have to be at least a million Emmas, Graces and Jacobs running around.

Nothing on those lists I dislike, though am not mad keen on Katie and Rosie as given names (though very nice as nns for Katherine/Kate and Rose)

My faves are ...
Alice
Ada (newest addition to my list, as a first name)
Grace
Rose
Eliza (my second fave variant of Elizabeth, after Elise)

Also like Eleanor and Clare, those are my roomates names.

Arthur
Max
Thomas (my brother's mn, picked it myself)
Richard*
Edward
Oliver
Henry
Andrew

*really do think this name is awesome. Kind of a shame next to nobody is using it any more, but that just makes it offbeat ergo cooler. Has been roadtested by my brother, and he wears it well.

Eliza is very pretty, I really like all variants and short forms of Elizabeth (except the one I got stuck with, oh the irony)

Had a similiar thing there, my mum wanted to name me Megan. Would have liked that, could have pulled off Meg.

So you're in the UK, cool, so am I. :)

Yeah I know a fair few Katie (with that as a full name). They've all ended up going by Kate. Which I suppose it more 'grown up'.

whee.

I'm not a fan of any of your girls names, but I love Thomas, Oliver, Ashley, Henry & James. I like Ashley much better as a boy's name, but I don't think I'd want to subject a boy to it, seeing how it's much more popular for girls now.

Eleanor - Fine
Katie - A bit common for my taste, but otherwise nice.
Laura - Fine
Alice - Love it
Rosie - Too cutesy
Lauren - Fine, prefer Laurel which is a little more unique, but still a nice name.
Margaret (nn Peggy) - I don't personally like Margaret, but I think Peggy would be a pretty sassy name on the right person.
Ada - Fine
Agnes - I'm not quite ready for this one to come back into rotation yet.
Grace - SO tired of it.
Rose - Ditto
Emma - Tritto
Clare - Prefer Claire, but otherwise nice.
Eliza - Fine
Katriona - Nice
Vera - Fine

Jacob - Way overused right now.
Edmund - Nice

Frederick (nn Fred)- Ah! :)
Arthur - Love it
Max - Nice
Thomas - Nice. I like Thomas, not Tom.
Richard - Eh, dull.
Ian - Nice
Edward - Ok
Oliver - Nice
Ashley - Too far gone to the girls I think.
Henry - Love it
Andrew - Common, but I like it.
James - Ditto. And I like James, not Jim, or Jimmy.

If Laurel is used on males, it's not frequent (in the U.S. anyway) as I've never met one. I have, on the other hand, known two male Laurens. One spelled Lauren and one spelled Loren. But both Lauren and Laurel are considered female names in my mind.

*squee* yay for names!

I love your taste in names. :)

Out of the girls' names, I really enjoy:
Eleanor
Katie
Laura
Alice
Rosie
Lauren
Margaret (nn Peggy)
Ada
Grace
Rose
Emma
Clare

Out of the boys' names:

Alex
Jacob
Frederick (nn Fred)
Arthur
Max
Thomas
Richard
Ian
Edward
Oliver
Henry
Andrew
James

I enjoy the classic style of the names you have selected. Being that I'm in the US, I'm not sure about the popularity of the names in the UK, but I'd say that they would definitely leave room for individuality...at least here! :)

A lot of these names, especially the girl's ones, are pretty popular. Emma is at the top of baby names lists almost everywhere.

They're nice names, but if you're trying to avoid your kid being Jessica C. or Jennifer H., you might not want to go with those. :)

Vera is very uncommon without being out too out there. I really like that one.

You have a wonderful taste in names!
You're one of the first people I've come across who likes Clare as opposed to Claire. Woo hoo!

Ada - not my style
Agnes - majorly old person's name here
Grace - nice, especially the meaning, I see it as more of a middle name

Clare - my name is Claire :) so that spelling grates my nerves but only cos it's my rival spelling
Eliza - not my style

Vera - not my style

Boys:

Alex - alright

They do seem very traditional. My Grannie is called Vera, and my great aunt is Margaret. My name is Lauren! Yay - you are the first person I have seen here to even mention that name! I like Elenor and Ada, and I LOVE Eliza.
I also like Alex, Jacob and Oliver, and I LOVE Max.

great taste in names, and although some are not ones i would personally use (like alice, lauren, alex, and frederick) but still especially love:

eleanor, katie (though perhaps not as a full name but as a nickname for kathleen or kaitlin or katherine), alice, lauren, ada, grace, emma, clare (though i prefer claire), eliza. and for boys: alex, frederick, edward, ashley (LOVE it), henry, and max and oliver are our top two boys names, so i have to say those are my favorites.
