I know there have been posts on this name before, but we don't seem to tag here and for the sake of not scrolling through billions of entries, I'm posting another.

I recently read "The Other Boelyn Girl" by Philippa Gregory and it's got me thinking about the name. I used to dislike it, but after thinking on it a bit and hearing on a TV show as well as from this author it's beginning to grow on me.

Not sure that I'll actually be having any more kids but were I to have one today and it were a girl, I am feeling compelled to say her name would be Philippa Elizabeth.

also, how do you all pronounce Philippa? and wdyt of Pippa as a nickname? to me it screams quirk and endearing cuteness. this may be my perception as I'm pretty sure the name Pippa is not common around here.

i pronounce it fil-eep-ah, emphasis on the 'eep'. pippa is an awesome nickname.

just to clarify, i know my pronunciation is probably incorrect, but i'm used to assuming unusual/foreign pronunciations for names.

Philippa is a favorite of mine. I pronounce it "PHIL-ih-puh." I don't like the nickname Pippa because it reminds me of Pippy Longstocking. I've always thought Phillie would make a cute nickname, but it would be a kind of playful family thing, not something I'd call her on an everyday basis. I don't like the idea of, say, shouting it across a playground.

It's cute until she starts dating a guy whose last name is Heyman (pronouced "High-men").

And that's not meant as a joke. I actually know someone with the last name of Heyman who just started dating a girl named Philippa. Poor girl.

One of my good friends is named Philippa (Phil-ih-puh), and goes by Pippa or Pip. I love Pip. I've found that Pippa doesn't roll off the tongue as easily...I think it's all the p's coupled with the open vowel sound at the end. Or else I'm just a lazy talker. ;)
