[identity profile] hopeless.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
I'm not pregnant but my husband and I are thinking about a second child.

We have a daughter named Ria Emily. (feel free to share thoughts on that)

We live in India. I am not Indian but my husband is. Our child(ren) will however attend an international school and will likely be surrounded with more foreigners than Indians.

Any ideas on a name for a potential sibling?

Indian names tend to be hard to pronounce for others, especially my family. I don't mind common middle names, but common first names are not an option.

May I ask how you came to Ria's name - is it a form of Rhea or an Indian name? It would make thinking of similar names easier as that one is quite uncommon, at least where I am :)

It's popular in every conceivable spelling. Add 'em up, and it's even worse than people might expect.

I LOVE the name Priya. If I could use it in a context where it wouldn't seem odd and out of place I would.

There's a large Indian population where I am in Canada, and most of those I've met who have traditional Indian names find western nicknames that vaguely relate to their real name. My husband's boss, Ranjeet, goes by Ron or Randy, for instance. So that might be an option for you?

Ron's sister-in-law's name is Suki, and besides her being a sweetheart, I think her name is just about the cutest thing ever. I don't know if it's short for anything, though.

we had a calico cat named Suki. I don't know where we came up with it, but I always liked her name!

logarrhea (sp) means something like 'chatty'. rrhea means flowing (which is pretty when not paired up with poop heh)(log = words)

anyway, i wouldn't worry about that - but maya, ria WOULD sound like it!

I used to work for a couple of Indian families. Some names I liked:

Sreedevi
Karishma
Uma
Krishna (She was a girl, thought it was an interesting idea)
Neelima (Supposed to translate to something similar to "blue girl", pronounced "neely-MA")
Sonali

Then for boys Ravi and Nikhil.

That's too bad. :( I live in Texas and I'd say South Asians make up less than .5% of our population in my town, had no idea they were common names.

I do like Uma too though. :)

I totally catch your drift. I think Ashley on its own is a gorgeous name, but I would never name one of my children that.

You'll come up with something. :)

O-wist-a

The reason I say "wist" and not just "ist" is that is the closest way that I can think of pronouncing the "ou" sound. It's a pretty name.
