[identity profile] babyjess8.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
My cousin and girlfriend have decided to name their soon-to-arrive baby Alexander. (I assume that's how it will be spelled. I'll strangle them if they spell it Alyxander or Allexsandher or something equally ridiculous! Not that I've ever seen it spelled any other way).

I hope it won't be shortened to Alex. Or Ally. (I don't mind Xan/Xander)  I intend to call him Alexander in full. To me, it is an adorable yet strong name. And timeless. Popular, but not overused.

WDYT?

Also, does anyone have any suggestions for middle names?

It's the opposite for me! I love the name Alexandra but I really don't like Alexander. Probably because I've known a lot of douchbaggy male Alex's in my life.

I've seen it spelled Alixander, too.

I love Alexander, both in it's full form, or as Alex (or Xander/Xan). I like the full form a little better, though, and when it comes to Alexandra, I am a full form all the way.

I like it! It's on my list. I don't mind Alex, Alec, Xan, or Xander as nicknames, but Ally seems so feminine. Ick. If we use it, we'll probably use Xan/Xander. I've also heard Sandy, which doesn't seem quite as feminine as Ally, but still doesn't seem masculine enough to me. Sander might work, like a more sibiliant from of Xander, but it sounds like a power tool. There's also Lex, which I don't hear often; not sure how I feel about that one.

Alexander is such a long name that I think a lot of names will flow well with it as a middle name; I'd just stay away from other names that end in -er. I might also avoid names with prominent X or Z sounds; Alexander Zachary and Alexander Xavier sound a little odd (but not terrible) to me.

my nephews name is alexander, and as much as his parents swore he was going to go strictly by alexander, he is 6 years old and the only time they call him that is when he is in trouble. he is always always either alex or aj.

I love Alexander.. but I've always seen it spelt Aleksander... simply because the two boys I actually KNEW were cousins and born on the same day so their parents named them the same (it was horrible for them... they went to the same school, in the same class and both were Aleksander Mischa K_____... their teachers hated it!)

But I like Lex, Alec, Zander... those are my fave nicks for Alexander.

I'm with you. I love and adore Alexander for all the reasons you do. It's too common of a name for me (along with my having a cousin named Alexandra) to use as a first name, but I love it as a middle name.
