Thanks for all the comments on our girl's name list, it helped us out a LOT.
My fiance and I both decided our favorite name on our list is Vera. Then he suggested spelling it Veira. I think it looks more complete spelled that way, but I also think it looks like we just butchered a classic name and are trying to be unique. Thoughts?

Date: 2008-04-01 07:18 pm (UTC)Veira is a legit name - see http://www.hebrewbabynames.com/item.cfm?itemid=6852
This would be pronounced Veh-ee-ra, I believe.
But if your after the meaning/pronuciation of Vera - truth, faith - then maybe Verity is a more 'complete' name that could work for you two - or Veera which is the Finnish spelling.

Date: 2008-04-01 07:35 pm (UTC)I didn't know Veira was legit, until I read the comment above, otherwise it would have totally looked made up, to me.
Vera is an evergreen, you can't go wrong with that one.

Date: 2008-04-03 12:13 am (UTC)Yeah, if it were only that easy!
Have you noticed that other people have said they would pronounce Veira as VEER-uh? Also, why is Keira spelled that way if it's really pronounced KAY-ra?
And certain letters might make certain sounds but it looks like it's split 50/50 about how to pronounce Vera too. VEER-uh or VER-uh?
Anyway, we decided to avoid the issue altogether and name her Guinevere. We'll use Vera (VEER-uh) as her nickname though. :)

Date: 2008-04-03 01:53 am (UTC)And yeah, I think names are just one of those funny things where people can disagree on how to say them because they come from different parts of the world, different languages and some of them are just made up.
