Thanks for all the comments on our girl's name list, it helped us out a LOT.

My fiance and I both decided our favorite name on our list is Vera. Then he suggested spelling it Veira. I think it looks more complete spelled that way, but I also think it looks like we just butchered a classic name and are trying to be unique. Thoughts?

It depends on if the exact meaning is important to you.

Veira is a legit name - see http://www.hebrewbabynames.com/item.cfm?itemid=6852
This would be pronounced Veh-ee-ra, I believe.

But if your after the meaning/pronuciation of Vera - truth, faith - then maybe Verity is a more 'complete' name that could work for you two - or Veera which is the Finnish spelling.

Also thought I should say that I love it spelled either way :)

I think it depends on how you pronounce it. Personally I prefer it spelled Vera, if it's pronounced as ver-UH. Veira reminds me of VIE-ruh (Vie rhyming with lie.)..

I would suggest Veera then, instead of Veira. vei = /vey" to me.

I immediately pronounced it as VEER-uh when I read Veira. I think that spelling works just fine for what you want.

I think you should stick to Vera.
I didn't know Veira was legit, until I read the comment above, otherwise it would have totally looked made up, to me.

Vera is an evergreen, you can't go wrong with that one.

Having read that Veira is another, differently-pronounced name, I would definitely not use it if you are going to pronounce it like Vera. :-/

I love the name Vera though. And I like Veira if pronounced correctly.

If I saw a name spelled as Veira, I would wonder if the pronunciation were something more like VAY-ruh than VEER-uh.

Why spell it Veira? Vera is a beautiful name, and it's already uncommon. Changing the spelling will ruin it.

all I can think of is news anchor Meredith VEE-AIR-UH, and that pronunciation is very different from veer-uh or ver-uh, so I think you should keep in mind that some people might go for the VEE-AIR-UH pronunciation before changing the spelling

I'm kind of a killjoy, I guess, because I madly prefer Vera.

If I saw Veira I would pronounce it VEH-ee-rah or VAY-ee-rah.

I like it spelled Veira. Just Vera reminds me of Vera Bradley and Vera Wang, and I'd pronounce it Verr-Uh. But Veira looks nicer, doesn't have any associations and I pronounce Veer-Uh - which I assume is how you want it pronounced?

I almost fell in love with a Vera. Keep it short?

Yay! That one was my favorite!

I prefer Vera. Both are good though.

I've always heard Vera pronounced VEER-ah. Veira looks like VEHR-ah or VAY-rah to me. I liked the suggestion above of using Verity as a full name if Vera is too short for you, and shorten it to Vera.

You were right on the money when you said it sounds and looks like you butchered a classic name. Not to mention that Veira would be pronounced "VAY-ra" not Vera at all. Certain letters make certain sounds, people!

I think it's a question of tradition. Keira is a Gaelic name, and it's traditionally pronounced Kee instead of Kay. Usally "ei" makes an ay sound, as in lei.

Anyway, I LOVE Guinevere. I thin you made the right decision. :)

That's not exactly true: there is no K in the Gaelic alphabet and ei (without an accent on the i) would be pronounced 'eh'. Keira would be spelled Ciara according to 'correct' Gaelic phonics.

I wildly prefer Vera.
