[identity profile] mojojoyjoy.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
Hi, all.  I'm about four months along with my first baby and need help choosing a girl's name.  (Don't know yet if we're having a girl or boy but if we have a boy, hubby has already decided to name him Jacob.)

BabyNames.com list.
Poll in my journal.

(I'm leaning towards Ava Sophia.)

I really like Jacob Avery and Ava Sophia. Isabella Kate is okay, but what about Isabella Sophia? It's a little long, but I think it flows pretty well.

All of the first name choices for girls are super super safe. Not that safe is bad, of course, but I'd go with Parker as a middle just to give her a hidden SOMETHING setting her apart a bit on paperwork or whatever. Common names are somehow sadder when the middle names are common, too. I went to school with two girls named Michelle Elizabeth, THREE named Jessica Marie, and so on.

At least it's not Ava Grace, which seems to be an incredibly popular matched set.

Even if your surname is uncommon, keep in mind she could marry into Smith or Johnson, etc.

So yes. I vote for ________ Parker [Lastname].

For what it's worth...

On a whim, I looked up some stats.

Googling "Ava Grace" (with quotation marks, to only return results that had those names in that order) returns over 34,000 results.

"Ava Sophia" is still under 2000, so not too shabby. Even given that Grace seems to have hit its peak and be finally wearing out its welcome (as shown on the Name Voyager (http://www.babynamewizard.com/namevoyager/lnv0105.html)) and that Sophia is still on a very steep upward climb, you'd probably be okay. Too bad middles aren't documented somewhere!

Yeah... just realize that little Baby might venture out of your smallish town eventually, y'know? Even if you have no plans to move, she might, one day.

Sweetie, I'm sorry, but please, please, please, don't give your daughter (I find that, in general, guys don't mind having popular names that much) any of those popular names. Emma, Ava, Ella, those are getting so popular and overused now, really.
This is all coming from an Emily, so believe me, I know how it feels to have the same name as everybody else. It, quite plainly, sucks. I can't stress this enough. I've gone through my life so far feeling like my name isn't my own, and I hate that. Don't do that to your child.
Those are all beautiful names that you picked, and I guess that's sort of the problem. A lot of other people think those are beautiful names too.

Please, I don't want to sound pushy, like I'm trying to tell you what to name your child or anything, but really, don't give your daughter a popular name like the ones you've picked. I know I probably sound like a huge bitch right now, I'm sorry, but having a common name has very negatively impacted my life, and I don't want anyone else to go through that.

Just, please, try and mull over what I've said. Congrats on the new baby, though!

Sure, the names are all really common, but you could do a lot worse. Your kid might always be one of three Avas or Emmas or Jacobs in a class, but at least their name won't look tacky and dated in twenty years, like Nevaeh, or Addison, or Jayden. If you care about popularity, I would advise you to pick a name that's not in the top ten (you can find popularity stats HERE (http://www.behindthename.com/top/lists/100us2006.php)), but if you don't care, go for it... they're all nice names.

Congrats! I have to agree with emtotherescuee, completely. I don't have a popular name, either as a first name or a middle one, but I would grieve for the child who will be the 3rd or 4th Emma, Ella, Isabella, Ava, or Sophia in their homeroom. If those names happen to be the ones that you love once you meet your baby girl, then by all means use them, but try and think about other names before you commit, too.

Suggestions:

Phoebe
Adeline/Adelina
Elanora
Valeria (vuh-LAIR-ree-uh)
Nora
Juliana
Rosalind/Rosalie
Ada
Ivy
Zelda
Zaida
Cecily/Cecilia
Charlotte
Analiese
Maeve
Anya/Anja
Katarina/Catalina

babynamebible.com also has variations and suggestions for the names you love, if you're looking into it. The names, I think, are good alternatives and similar names... like Savannah and Faye in place of Ava, Esme for Emma, Anastasia for Isabella (Anastasia is one of my faves; I also recommend Analeisa)...

i agree somewhat with the other comments about the popularity issue, but i really do love isabella kate. and thought a middle name of parker was pretty cool. emma parker is cool, and if she wants something different when she gets older, she can go by parker! (like parker posey, not a bad person to have the same name as)

So what if the names are popular, if you like them that's all that matters! I personally LOVE Emma Sophia... I don't give two hoots about whether it's "too popular" or not.

I also love Isabella Kate, but think Kate Isabella sounds much nicer IMO :)
