Names that wouldn't be good for a child because they have too much of a stigma...

tiffany- seems like a bimbo name.
Britney- drug addled singer
Adolf- well,  obviously...
Madeleine- The Madeleine Mccann situation has really ruined that name for me. I know this woman who was considering it for her future daughter but doesn't like it anymore because any time she thinks of it she thinks of the missing girl.
Hillary- you could never say that name without thinking of the politician
Katrina- the Hurricane

anymore?

Paris - Paris Hilton
Amy - Amy Winehouse

...and I have to say that I still like the name Britney despite the whole Britney Spears drama. hehe. I also don't think of Madeleine Mccann when I hear that name...maybe because I know a few other people with the name but idk.
And it think Hillary won't be connected with Hillary Clinton in a few years....unless she becomes President.

I don't automatically associate Amy with Amy Winehouse. There are a lot of famous Amys, including Amy Adams who I love!

Hillary- you could never say that name without thinking of the politician

I would hardly consider that a stigma

I'm neither of these, and I still find it, her, negative...

I didn't get the impression that she meant people would react to it in a negative way... just that people would always think of Hillary Clinton. Like if you named your kid Diana, people would think of Princess Diana.

I wouldn't. I met two Dianas this summer and didn't think of it once!

Haha, fair enough, it might not have been the best analogy. Personally I wouldn't automatically think of Hillary Clinton if I heard the name Hillary, either.

To me "stigma" implies a negative connotation. But I guess I shouldn't assume it's like that for everyone, you're right. My bad!

Looks like she did mean it in a negative way, so you were right, and I was wrong! :P

Me too. And I also don't automatically think of Hillary Clinton even though she got my vote. No more than Bill makes me think of Bill Clinton.

i don't really think of britney as a drug addled singer's name.

britney, as well as ashley and jessica and the like all remind me of slutty college girls, truly.

I get Adolf, Katrina, Britney (though I do like the name spelled Brittany) and even Hillary (though I love Senator Clinton so much I would name a child after her).

I don't get your argument for Tiffany, however. It's just YOUR opinion that it "seems like a bimbo name". A lot of other people think it's a nice name.

Also, Madeleine is a very common name and there are a lot of famous people named Madeleine; I don't think most people would automatically associate it with the kidnapped girl like they would Britney, Adolf, and Katrina with their respective disasters.

I agree.

With the bit about Madeleine--JonBenet might be a little different, but Madeleine is a perfectly normal name that won't be associated with the kidnapping for too long.

I have to say I second the Tiffany = bimbo thing.

I've never really been a fan of Tiffany or Britney anyway, but Adolf is really the only one that I think has the negative connotation, even though it is a relatively popular name in other countries.

My name IS Hilary and I get the Mrs. Clinton, Ms. Duff, Ms. Swank, etc. crap all the time. But I've learned to just laugh it off.

Kermit - hard to say this name without "the Frog" following it.
Linus - kid from the Peanuts with the blanket (I wouldn't let this one stop me)
Felix - the cat (I'd use this one, but I get this criticism all the time)
Madonna

sebastian - crab
ursula - fat purple mean octopus woman

Yeah, I like Linus...but everyone thinks of the Peanuts character. I'm not sure I'd let it stop me either.

And I always do think of the cat when I hear the name Felix, but I like it anyway.

:o)

Angelina?
or maybe that's just me because i actually love the name and have for quite sometime but i wouldn't want people thinking i named it after Angelina Jolie. i have nothing against her--she's very beautiful and does great work--but i'm not a die hard fan or anyting and people probably would assume i was if i named my daughter Angelina

That's how I feel about the name Brittany... except I don't like Britney Spears!

Damien: Omen II

I still have damian on my list ;)

I don't see how thinking of the politician is necessarily a bad thing for Hillary. It's, uhm . . . definitely on a different par than Adolph.

From: [identity profile] tryyingtoevolve.livejournal.com
With that logic, Barack should be out as a name, too, since he's pissing off a lot of people in the Democratic party as well (me and many of my friends, for example). I don't think that being the underdog in a presidential campaign really makes one's name absolutely terrible. I think people are more likely to dislike Hillary because of Duff than because of Clinton. And I can think of a lot worse things than being named after a strong, successful, inspiring politician.

I don't think this is really the place to be starting political arguments, to be honest. She didn't say Hillary Clinton was better than, uh, Barack Obama, she just said that Hillary was definitely on a different par than Adolph, which I think we can all agree is true. Hillary Clinton's political tactics are kind of irrelevant here.

I the only one of the names you listed that I consider to be off-limits would be Adolf. Obviously it has some of the worst connotations, but it is also unfamiliar enough that most people wouldn't be able to connect it to someone else if they wanted to (at least in North America).

With Britney, there are many people with the name, including multiple celebrities. Chances are that if you're reading something to do with celebrities, then it is Britney Spears who is being referenced, but I don't know that it's the first thing I think of.

I definitely think a lot of names have been 'tainted' by Disney and Sesame Street and stuff. Oscar, Grover, Kermit, Gaston...

I always think of the McCanns when I hear the name Maddie, although I'm guessing that's because it's still a recent news story and probably wont be as big a deal in a few years time.

I remember hearing about a girl who'd been murdered whose name was Leoni. I thought it was quite a nice name, but I could never use it. Not because anyone else would necessarily know the connetation, but because I could never be honest when my daughter asked where her name had come from.

Also, I wouldn't name a girl Myra or Maxine because I can't help think Hindley or Carr.

I would totally use Katrina. Natural disasters happen all the time, hurricanes always get people-names, and really...how long do you have to wait? If I lived in an area the hurricane (or any hurricane) had hit, I might be a bit more reluctant, I guess.

I would also use Madeleine if I didn't already have a niece called Madeline, but I posted about that below.

Britney Spears ruined the name for me years ago, not just with her relatively recent drug-crazies. I always loved it, too, until she became popular. *sigh*

Agreed on Hillary.

Tiffany always seems to get a bum rap. I've always liked the name, but people always seem to think it's a name for stereotypical dumb blondes and/or strippers. I wonder why that is.

Above. Obviously, I'm pregnant with a zombie instead of a baby, and it has eaten my brain. Left and right were always iffy, but now I can't seem to tell up from down. *sigh*
