[identity profile] classiestkid.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
My fiance and I are both very Irish and want to play it safe and name our future kids with Irish names(With the exception of Ava, it's my favorite girl's name.) My name's Shannon.
With that being said:

Siobhan.
pronounced like Chevonne. or shivawn

WDYT?

ETA:
My dad told me this is what he originally wanted to name me but knew that no one here would know how to say/spell it and he's right off the boat from Belfast, so I already knew all about that.
I really like it, I just don't know if I'd really use it and a middle name?

ETA again:
the future children's last name will be Crosbie

As an Irish American, I love it. I think it's beautiful and know how to pronounce it.

Everyday Joe more than likely will not. Future child will have to explain how to pronounce it constantly.

I am all for using Irish names, but Siobhan is awful. The spelling makes absolutely no sense, and it sounds like a stripper's name.

I think there are definitely better options out there.

The spelling makes absolutely no sense.

That's because it's not English. It makes perfect sense in Irish!

Yes. I meant Irish Gaelic (which I believe is different from Scots Gaelic? But don't quote me on that.) :)

Everyone here loves Irish names, so I'm sorry... BUT. No one will pronounce it correctly unless they are from Ireland (at least not many others will) and I think it sounds trashy anyway, the sha and the von part...

I like the name but agree that outside of Ireland, the pronunciation will be butchered.

Siobhan and Caoimhe are like the names everyone uses when they want to sound Irish/Gaelic. There have got to be other Irish names out there... Siobhan just doesn't sound good to me, and it's too close to Shannon, anyway. If you live in Ireland, maybe, if not, I think it's a bad idea.

I agree so much. Siobhan is the Irish name of the moment, and it's ridiculous. It doesn't even sound nice -- and I honestly thought that it was French when I first heard it. If you want to honor your Irish heritage (or, are Irish) why not stick with something like Bridget or Mary with Molly as a nick-name?

I would have to disagree. I know several adult Siobhans. I feel like the name is common enough that most people know it, and if not it is not that difficult to pronounce. I am not a big fan of the name myself, but I don't think spelling and pronounciation would as big an issue as others think.

I don't have any idea how to pronounce it. Nobody I know would know how to pronounce it.

Although 'most people know it' is subjective to where you live, I'm sure.

I still see it as being a BIG problem.

I've lived all over the US and Canada, and I've known Siobhans in many areas. Yes, it might be a "big problem" in certain areas, but it doesn't take long to learn a new name. The poster likes the name, and I wanted to share some positive input based on my experience.

I love it. I don't think it will be too difficult to pronounce at all because it is a fairly common and well-known name. It's one of my favorite Irish names, along with Eilish and Saoirse.

Also, here are some middle name suggestions (if you don't plan on using Irish middle names, that is):
Siobhan Adair
Siobhan Alexandra
Siobhan Catherine/Katherine
Siobhan Melanie
Siobhan Tara

Oh, but if the last name is Crosbie and you use the middle name Alexandra, her initials will spell SAC!

I think Siobhan Crosbie kind of sounds like a stage name/stripper name. :(

I like it, but it has a bad connotation for me, and that makes me angry because I like that name! Some girl used to pretend it was her name and pronounce it Shi-bin.

Irish names are pretty. I like Bridget, Molly, Meaghan... my husband is Irish and looks it. I'm Italian and... lol don't look it.

LOVE IT. I was almost Siobhan, and it's one of my professor's names. Once you hear how it's pronounced, it kind of sticks with you. It's not easily forgettable, so I don't think there'd be too much of a problem.

It's WAY better than some of the made up names of other children that your child(ren) with be growing up with, in my opinion.

I like the name Siobhan ... I wouldn't worry too much about the spelling/pronunciation, because people will figure it out, and at least that's the accepted spelling of the name, it's not like you made it up.

I think with the last name Crosbie, though, Siobhan sounds better as a middle name.

I went to school with a Siobhan and she never really had pronunciation issues so I would no worry about it (I'm in NY btw)

She said it as Sha-vaun so i guess the Shivawn pn is what I am thinking of. I'd def go with that.

Siobhan really reminds me of Sybian, which is a sex toy. But, other than that, it's not bad. And it's not pronounced that way at all, but to people who do not know the name, they could possibly do the same thing I did.

I really want to go with the Irish name Egan. It's my mother's maiden name and I really like it.

I love the traditional spelling...its the sound of the name I'm not crazy about. I know you didn't ask, but my favorite Irish names are Aoife, Aine, Aoibheann, Aoibhegréine, Brogan (m), Cian (m), Cillian (m), Cormac (m), Diarmaid (m), Eithne, Eoghan (m), Labhraidh (m), Laisrén (m), Laoire (m), Líadan, Lochlann(m), Naomh , Niamh, Ríordán (m), Rónán (m), and Sé (m)

I think it's ok. I can't believe people would have trouble with the spelling/pronounciation would they? I dunno...in the UK it's pretty common so I can't imagine someone not knowing how to pronounce it!

I've always liked Siobhan... but you (and then she) will be correcting people for her entire life. I also really like Aoife, but... too many vowels next to each other for general consumption.

How about Sinead? It's a little easier to "get". Or Aislinn, Brigid, Eileen, Deirdre, Fiana, Fiona, Fiara, Maeve, or Tara?

I like the sound of Siobhan Crosbie. I knew a Siobhan once and I can say its an interesting and impressionable enough name for the pronunciation and spelling to stick the first time.

Some people may have trouble but in the important aspects in life she was fine.

:)

I admit that I can never remember how to pronounce it. Once I figure it out I think it's pretty, maybe I have a brain block against Siobhan.

I've never heard it.

I would pronounce it 'See-OH-bahn' lol.

But.. pronounced that was I think it's pretty.
