I think it was made up specifically for the novel, and stems from Oedipus, the King of thebes in greek litertaure who married his mother and killed his father.

Romanizing it to Ulyssa would be better, I think

That's not the same character. Ulysses is the equivalent of Odysseus, not Oedipus.
