I think it was made up specifically for the novel, and stems from Oedipus, the King of thebes in greek litertaure who married his mother and killed his father.

The sound of the name is kind of pretty, but I can't imagine giving this name to anyone unless you were *trying* to give them a complex.

That's not the same character. Ulysses is the equivalent of Odysseus, not Oedipus.

It immediately reminded me of Oedipus, it's way too close not to draw that association. I mean, not everyone would know of that particular Greek myth or the Oedipus Complex, but those that do would definitely make the connection.
