What do you think of the name Calliope?

I'm looking for more than "I like it" or "I hate it." Like, do you know how to pronounce it? Do you think it's too weird? Do you like the sound? Do you have any further thoughts?

I know how to pronounce it, and I like it in reference to a Greek muse, but it reminds me too much of going to shrine camp as a kid w/ my grandparents and riding the freaky circus wagon thing called the Calliope. I've been terrified of clowns and circuses since I was a tiny kid, and that thing kinda ruined the word Calliope for me. :-/

I like it a lot. I would consider using it but there's no way my boyfriend would go for it.
I also like Penelope.

Not in British English.

Nor according to here (http://www.behindthename.com/php/view.php?name=calliope), here (http://www.musespeak.com/Meet_Musespeak.htm), here (http://www.bendermelodies.com/calliope_history.htm), here (http://www.randomhouse.com/wotd/index.pperl?date=20001103), nor the OED.

Nor my sister-in-lsw's sister Cally-short-for-Calliope, who I would think knows how to pronounce her own name even if she doesn't use it much.

The original Greek would be cah-lee-OH-pay, circus argot has it as cally-ope, but 'cah-LEE-oh-pee' is neither fish nor fowl.

wouldnt want to pronounce it. wouldnt know how to spell it. and even if i did, what about when baby goes to school? i bet little 6yr olds couldnt spell it. i think she(im assuming) would have to spell it the rest of her life for every little thing.

no offense, its just not my cup o' tea;)

I agree with you. It's no harder to spell than Jennifer, and definitely easier than some of those atrocious kr8tyv names.

most kids can pronounce names like jennifer though. Im not saying i'd use jennifer either, too common. dont want anouther jennifer c.

and for the record. i do like it. i think its pretty. but i think of the convience of spelling for the child too:)
to each his own.

I like it, for the sound and meaning (am a sucker for mythological names). Would only consider it as a mn though. Prefer simpler first names, for the reasons angelwifey pointed out.

Forum friend of mine has a baby daughter named Hazel Calliope.

I can pronounce it and know where it comes from. But.
While I like the way it looks, it doesn't sound very pretty... does that make sense? And Calliope would most likely go by/be called Callie, which isn't very nice, I think.

I know how to pronounce it, and I think it's all right, not something I'd ever name my daughter though.

How do you pronounce Callie? I've never met someone with that name. Is it like Call-ee, like a phone call?

Never heard it and I assumed it'd be pronounced "Cally-ope" before I read the comments.
