Girls names are really hard for me. I want this name to be perfect. My best friend, Melissa often tells me I have a "name for the week".

The middle name is going to be Michelle - that's already decided. We love it, and it will also honor my step-father Michael. But while the name is half chosen already, the quest for the "perfect name" is never ending.

I always hated Alysha - and I've gone by Ally for as long as I can remember. I like the name now, and go by it professionally - but I do also remember being a kid. Being surrounded by Jennifers, Jessicas, Meghans, Carries, etc. We had 4 Meghan's in my first grade class! My mother picked names that she though would be unique but not too out there and I think she did a good job.

The top four girls names are: Ava, Elisabeth, Sabrina, and Chloe. Grant, my hubby wants to veto Ava - which leaves me really upset because it's the name that I really like.

But I run into names that I like every day - and it's hard for me to not add them to the ever-growing list of "possibles". :) EG. Carmella, Danielle, Rosalie, Ella, Audrey, etc etc etc.

So, the quest continues... the boy name is equally hard. Especially with a husband who is insisting the boy be named "John". :) (no offense to any John's out there - but come on... the most common name for 75 years, according to the Social Security office.)

if you're worried about a name being very common (like john), i wouldn't go with ava, elisabeth, chloe, danielle, ella, or audrey. elisabeth and danielle have been popular for a long time, while ava, chloe, ella, and audrey have all become very popular recently.

recent stats:
ava - #1 (2007)
audrey - #27 (2007)
chloe - #9 (2007)
danielle - #116 (2006)
elisabeth - #502 - but elizabeth was #11 (2006)
ella - #16 (2007)

i would go for sabrina, which is more uncommon, or with a name similar to sabrina (marina, sabina, sabine, corinna, audrina, etc).

a good alternative for audrey could be audra, auden, or aurelie. aubrey is good too, although that's pretty common.

danielle could be changed to daniella or even danica.

ella could be changed to elle, della, belle, or like you said, something like carmella.

ava could be substituted by eva, eve, avalyn, avalon, avery (although that's getting kind of popular too)

there are a multitude of names that are similar to elisabeth: eliza, libby, bethany, elise, elspeth, beth, etc.

the name clover is similar to chloe, though that might be a little too "out there" for your tastes. :P

whew. sorry for the long comment, but hopefully i helped. :]
