So, I was looking at my name list yesterday. One of the names for a girl that I really like is Rayne. So I got to thinking that if I spelled it "Raine", then it could be considered to be in honor of my grandmother, "Lorraine" (which name I really don't like. Bad connotations having nothing to do with my grandmother). I was wondering what you all thought of naming a child "after" some one, but not using the exact name. Not necessarily a using nickname, but a variation or different spelling?

Anyway, the four [EDIT]grandmothers great-grandmothers of the aforementioned potential child are: Lorraine, Margaret, Helen, and Josephine.

Variations I've come up with are:
Lorraine:
Raine
Raina
Lorelei
Lorelle

Margaret:
Margaux
Margot
Marguerite
Greta

Helen:
Helaine
Helene
Helena
Lena
Elaine

Josephine:
Josephina
Josette

Any others spring to mind?

For Josephine: Jocelyn, Joanna, Johanna.

I've considered using the name 'Judith' in honor of the writer Judy Blume. I know, lame, but she's one of my favorite writers and really inspired me to start writing myself. I also plan to use the middle name of 'Carver' after Raymond Carver, so my literary tastes aren't all so . . . you know;) I just don't like the name Judy, but I love Judith, so I think it would be cool.

I think, if the name means the same to you, use it. Like, if you hear the name 'Raine' and think of your grandmother, then that's what matters.

...Do you not like any of the names as they stand? I personally think that Margaret is a nice name for a girl, and you could always use a *ugh* nickname if you wanted.

As for using "Josephina" or "Helene"/"Helena" as substitutes for "Josephine" and "Helen" -- I guess I just don't see the point. IMHO, all of these names are fine in their original form.

Of course, I may just be biased, as Helen is my middle name and I quite like it. I'd also be fine with it if it were my first name.

Well, now, there's nothing worse than being haunted by those pesky grandmothers ;)

"That's because Margaret's dead and you're not!"

OK, that made me laugh a lot harder than it should have. Srsly.

My grandmothers were Marguerite (went by Peggy) and Elena (went by Helen). My cousin who goes by "Maggie" was named after my grandmother Marguerite (apparently there were 3 or 4 generations before my grandmother with the same name). My name is Melissa Elena, my middle name obviously my dad's mom's real name, because she was the one who introduced my parents to each other.

Then my sister's name is Emily Ann, because my mom's name is Ann, they would have used Marguerite, but my aunt had already used it for Maggie like 7 years before Emily was born.

I love the names Raine and Helena. For Lorraine you could use Laine or Lanie. Josephine-Josie, but I like Josie better a nn.

A potential variation of Josephine could be Josefa ... that was my great-grandmother's name. For any of those I like Josie as a nickname.
