I love the nickname Lane/Laine for a boy or a girl. Alas, we have plenty of boy names picked out already, so I'd love to hear what names for a girl you could take Lane/Laine from as a nickname (besides Elaine and its variants).

Also, just out of curiosity, which spelling do you prefer for a girl?

Thanks!

I prefer the Laine spelling, and think it's more of a girl name myself.

That's how I've always pronounced that name, it's virtually impossible for me to pronounce it the proper way. Lol.

I love the nicknames Laine and Lainie for a girl, but not so much for a boy. The only name I could think of that I like as a full name is Alaina.

I like the name Laine on a girl, with that spelling. Not so much for a boy, though.

I vote for Helena- I love that name, and that song. :O

I actually think Layne would be cool. But I am shameless stuck-in-the-90s Alice in Chains fan :P

I think I kind of heart you for this comment. I love them and think the same thing when I hear any form of Lane/laine/Layne.

I like Layne for a boy, by itself.

I went to school with a girl named Laina (on its own) and a girl whose middle name was Lane. I think they can stand on their own, though I like them short for Elaine/Elaina and Delaney.

I know a girl named Delaina, so Laine could be a nickname for that.

Also, it's a bit of a stretch, but Melanie could work.

According to behindthename.com, Laine is an Estonian name that means 'wave'. Not sure how accurate that is, but I thought it was interesting.

Melaina? or Marlena maybe? all the "good" and "logical" ones I would have picked are already taken.

I knew a Lainie and actually I like it on it's own. I prefer Laine for girls and Lane/Layne for boys.
