so how about the name Lievin, pronounced lee-ay-vin, for a boy? I kinda like it--it's got a similar sound to Levi but without being as common as I think Levi is starting to get. I'm not sure what the nationality is, but it's the name of a priest I know from the congo. I wonder if it translates to anything in english. I should ask him, but he's back in the congo now.

not loving it. everyone is going to pronounce it lie vin.. and not at all like it's supposed to be pronounced. :( I like your idea of seeing what it might translate into english. Or maybe use a more phonic way of spelling it so people don't butcher it. :)

LiƩvin is the name of a city in Pas-de-Calais, France. Also, you should note that the accent aigu over the e creates the correct pronounciation, so with the accent, it's spelled phonetically. (At least, phonetically to French speakers. And since it's French, I wouldn't recommend screwing with the spelling.)

However, I don't like it is a name. Why? Because it's a goddamn city. At least Paris was a name before it was a city...and you wouldn't name your kid "Minneapolis" or "Reno". Also, it's a somewhat rarer French last name...and I wouldn't name a child "DuPont" or "Chirac" either.

So I can see maybe one case in which it is acceptable. 1) the Congolese priest changed your life in some important way, and 2) You or your partner are French. Then, MAYBE.

stating an opinion is one thing, swearing and completely poo-pooing a name that someone likes, kinda mean and tackie. i don't want you to challenge me on this, i'm simply stating from experience, it hurts when a comment over a name is so brutally honest. Adding "but if you like it, go for it mom!" would have been a kind gesture...i'm just saying.

Uh.

I didn't swear. Every word I said can safely appear on the radio and network TV. So don't try to go FCC on me.

And I shouldn't have to sugarcoat my opinion on a name. When someone ASKS for feedback, I'm going to give it. Besides that, I wasn't MEAN. I just said that the French spelling shouldn't be changed, and that cities and French surnames aren't a good basis for naming a child.

I think its a nice name. But I do think it would be a good idea to see if there are any more English versions.
I'd never use it personally but that's mostly because my future husband's last name is Levi. :)
