Went to a baby shower last night for the upcoming birth of a little girl, Annalie Rose.

Heard that another preggers (there are 8 due before February, in my church) has chosen a name for their coming son: Ghileadh.

It's pronounced like the Hebrew town, Gilead. This boy will be little brother to Caius, which is Gaelic.

Is this a real name, or did my friends take a Hebrew word and try to make it Gaelic by adding silent H's (lenition, right?)?

I finally made a giant list of favorite girls' names.

Keep in mind that just because I like a name doesn't mean I'd necessarily use it. I'm perfectly aware that it would be cruel to saddle a twenty-first century American baby with Mahaut or Gwenllian.

My top contenders are: Julianna Alienor, Julianna Lily, Julianna Madeleine, Julianna Eloise, Linnea Eleri, Elisabeth/Elizabeth (I've always wanted a little girl called Betsy) Eloise, and Susanna/h Varadi. (Varadi is a family name.)

I tried to get at least a few names for every letter. As is the case in games like these, some of the names wound up being "least disliked" instead of names I'd actually consider using.

WDYT? )
