Hey everyone! Recently, there's been a lot of discussion here about the history and meanings of names - indeed, the "made up name" issue appears to have again reared its head in the post below me! I know that there has also been some frustration within the community among members who feel their more traditionally-based criticisms are not being heard, or who feel their attempts to discuss etymology have been wasted.

I talked it over with [livejournal.com profile] a_green_faerie, and decided to start a community: [livejournal.com profile] namingnames. This new community is meant to be a sort of supplement to [livejournal.com profile] baby_names, in my mind. We will discuss the history and etymology of names, various associations, famous bearers, meanings, parallel occurrences in other languages, etc. etc. It will also be fine to post a list of your favorite names for discussion, or just one name you heard recently, or interesting family names, or whatever. The only up-front requirements are that you keep discussion honest (the phrase "not my style" is outlawed), and that you accept criticism gracefully. Keep in mind that in a community about etymology and historical use, Maddissyn Seth for a girl is going to garner some criticism.

This community will not be for everyone, I realize. Some people find this sort of thing boring, and some people don't really care whether a name is newly-minted or meant for the opposite sex or whatever. But for others, hopefully [livejournal.com profile] namingnames will be a place to bring discussion they don't feel they've really been having in [livejournal.com profile] baby_names. It's not exactly a sister community, but it's meant to be just a fun addition to our regularly scheduled baby names programming!

Hope to see you there!

Cheers,
TN

Hi, guys! My name is Kiersten. I'm new here, but I've been obsessed with baby names since I was old enough to read. Now I actually have a constantly updated list over at babynames.com. I don't have any children of my own yet, but I have a 3-year-old stepson named Caleb Michael.

Here is my list of current favorites. )

I'm excited to hear what you guys think. (Good or bad.) =]

*I'm having a hard time with MNs for boys. I like the way Michael sounds with the last name (Lauder), but they'd be sharing a middle name with their brother and their father. Is that too many Michaels?
Also, can anyone think of any FNs that sound good with Rocco as a MN? (It's my grandfather's name, and I absolutely adore it, but I can't think of anything it sounds good with.)

HELP! (again.. lol)

I made another list, but I'm still in need of middle names. I'm not so sure I'll go with the one I had picked out.
Give me your honest opinion of them, and tell me if you can think of a way to pick on them because of the name.

My mom's friend's grandchildren are Gabrielle Luna, Colton Moon, and Tiger Lily. Gabrielle and Colton are twins, and Tiger Lily usually goes by Lily.
