The Real "Cheaper by the Dozen" family.

i have it set up as the mother/father on the top, in bold. their children below them, then their childrens spouse-- their kids.
note: i don't think that some of these are nicknames, because the 'full name' (ie: Lillian, Charles, Richard) are spelled out, so i don't think they'd put fullnames for some and not others. so i'm assuming these are all full names, not nicknames.

Frank and Lillian
  • Anne
    • Frank-- Peter, Frank, Robert.
  • Mary
  • Ernestine
    • Charles-- Charles, Lillian.
  • Martha
    • Richard-- Janet, Blair, Mary, Stephanie.
  • Frank
    • Elizabeth-- Betsey, Rebecca, Teddy.
  • Bill
    • Jean-- Lillian, Bill.
  • Lillian
    • Donald-- Julia, Dodge.
  • Fred
    • Jessie-- Susan, Frank, John.
  • Dan
    • Irene-- David, Danny, Peggy
  • John
    • Dorothy-- Peter, James, Deborah
  • Bob
    • Barbara-- Roy, Ann
  • Jane
    • George-- Laurie, Paula.

Wow, Frank and Lillian must need a two wallets to carry the pictures of their grandchildren in.

Christmas must have been confusing with so many kids sharing the same name.

Why would you name your child Lillian if her COUSINS name was Lillian as well?

this family sounds like they like their names to be too close.

That was quite common in families at the time, because there were all of these family naming traditions: "sons should be named in this order - paternal grandfather, maternal grandfather, father," etc. and daughters should be named after grandmothers, etc. It's ridiculous. I'm all for family names, if that's what you CHOOSE to do, but I think kids need their own identity as well.

I'm relatively sure that Bob, Fred, Bill, Teddy, etc. (and possibly Frank) were all short for something else, but they're probably listed as that because that's what they were called ALL the time, whereas Ernestine or Charles or Robert might have gone by their full names.

I like Frank, Anne, Peter, Mary, Charles, Martha, Elizabeth, Theodore but not Teddy, Fred (I prefer the full Frederick, though), Julia, John, David, James, and Jane.

I don't like Barbara, Deborah, Peggy (I've never understood how this was a nickname for Margaret, either, haha), Bob, Susan, Lillian, Ernestine, Richard, Blair, Stephanie, or Janet.

I think it's kind of nice that Elizabeth's daughter was named after her, but their son wasn't named after his father -- way to buck the system, man! :)

Thanks for posting this. I love the original version of Cheaper by the dozen. I too find it odd that two of the kids named their daughters after their mother Lillian, after having a sister of the same name also. I am glad we don't follow the traditions of naming after relatives now... I would have to choose from such lovelies as-- Essie, Geneva, Nellie, Gladys and Mary LaBelle
