What do y'all think about the name Kate? I've really found myself in love with it over the past few days, probably for the same reasons that I love Jane — the long a gives it a fresh sound, and it's short and classic at the same time.
And, if you do like the name Kate, do you prefer it to be short for something — Katherine, Katelyn, etc?

Date: 2008-01-13 11:17 pm (UTC)I often have to explain it that way, and one college I tried applying to didn't believe me when I filled out that little info card and kept sending things to "Katherine MYLASTNAME". Even when I called to correct them, they still sent things to "my full name". Needless to say, I never actually applied there...
Anyway, I really like my name. I've never gone by anything else. "Katie" actually makes the name longer, and I always thought nick names should make the name shorter.
The story is that my parents liked all of the "Kate" names (Katherine, Katelyn, Kathleen, etc.) and figured they'd just call me Kate anyway. So they named me that.

Date: 2008-01-14 12:13 am (UTC)I do not want it to be short for something when I use it. I like it as a stand alone name. I love how classic it is, I love how easily it is spelled, and I love how it ages.
My first born girl WILL be named Kate. My husband is on a kick that it needs to be short for something, but I have a few years to convince him so I'm working on it.

If it wasn't my name, I'd use if for my first daughter!

Date: 2008-01-14 03:13 pm (UTC)I prefer it as a name on its own. I don't really like any of the names for which it could be short. However, I bet it would be annoying for a child called that, with people always assuming it was a nickname.
