What do y'all think about the name Kate? I've really found myself in love with it over the past few days, probably for the same reasons that I love Jane — the long a gives it a fresh sound, and it's short and classic at the same time.

And, if you do like the name Kate, do you prefer it to be short for something — Katherine, Katelyn, etc?

i like it, but on it's own it just feels incomplete. personally i like it as a nn for Kathryn.

I like it, but honestly, it reminds me of the c-u-next-tuesday word, that's how it was used in Kiss Me, Kate and such. I do like Katherine, but I think I would use primarily Katie as a nn.

I like Kate, except the only Kate's I've known in real life I didn't like, so I'd never personally use it.

LOVE Kate, but I think it needs to be short for something. I prefer Katherine (only spelled Catherine).

I love Kate, and it would almost certainly be the nickname I would use, but I would definitely give Katherine as the full name. It's on my list of names that I plan to use in the distant future haha.

I'm a Katherine who goes by Kate. I adore my nickname and my given name. I feel like too much of a tomboy to be a Katherine all the time, so I love the option of Kate.

I think names should have nickname choices. Kate is sweet, but you really only have Katie, which I find childish. I think Katherine, nicknamed Kate and Katie, is a great name!

I like it but only as a nickname for Katherine (I hate Katelyn)

Agreed. I normally go by Katie, but I feel like I've outgrown it, so Kate is a good option.

I love Kate AND Jane.
And I prefer Kate just as it is. Not as a nickname.

I love it, whether on its own or as a nickname.

I know a girl who spells her name Kaite because it's short for Kaitlin and I really like that spelling too.

I went by Katie until I was about six. My elderly relatives still call me that sometimes, but my general rule is, If they changed my diapers, they can call me Katie. If not, they get corrected. I love Kate as an option. Kat sounds silly to me. It's an animal, not a name to me. I've known several women that go by Kat, but I'm just not a Kat.

I prefer Cate, short for Catherine.

I like Kate, but not Katie or Katherine spelled with a K.

I love Kate. It could be short for Katherine, Kathleen, or Caitlin.

I am a Kate. Just Kate. Not short for anything.

I often have to explain it that way, and one college I tried applying to didn't believe me when I filled out that little info card and kept sending things to "Katherine MYLASTNAME". Even when I called to correct them, they still sent things to "my full name". Needless to say, I never actually applied there...

Anyway, I really like my name. I've never gone by anything else. "Katie" actually makes the name longer, and I always thought nick names should make the name shorter.

The story is that my parents liked all of the "Kate" names (Katherine, Katelyn, Kathleen, etc.) and figured they'd just call me Kate anyway. So they named me that.

I like it, but it was one of the most popular names for girls when I was at primary school and I could just never use it because I know too many of them.

Kates, Jessies and Laurens - they seemed to be everywhere!

Kate is my favorite name in the whole entire world.

I do not want it to be short for something when I use it. I like it as a stand alone name. I love how classic it is, I love how easily it is spelled, and I love how it ages.

My first born girl WILL be named Kate. My husband is on a kick that it needs to be short for something, but I have a few years to convince him so I'm working on it.

I love Kate. The only problem is that so does everyone else nowadays--it's super-trendy because of Lost.

I definitely prefer it to be a nickname!

Kate is my name :D:D
And I love it!
If it wasn't my name, I'd use if for my first daughter!

Kate was one of my top names until I had a really bad experience with someone I know named Kate. This led me to absolutely hate the name for a long time. It's starting to ease into my past and I'm sure within time, I'll come back around to it.

I prefer it as a name on its own. I don't really like any of the names for which it could be short. However, I bet it would be annoying for a child called that, with people always assuming it was a nickname.

the only problem i have with nickname names is that people constantly ask you 'what is that short for'. i have a friend names katie and it bugs her till no end.

i like katherine.

I love just plain Kate. It's classic. Yes, it is more common, but it's not trendy. It's timeless. If you use Katherine, they might get Kat, which is different then Kate by a lot.

*sigh* I do love Kate but that's my boyfriend's ex girlfriends name... so that puts a stop on that :P
