WTF. Seriously, HOW hard is it to pronounce Angelique? I was called Angela for the quadrillionth time today! Those names do not sound similar enough to be mistaken for each other, in my opinion.

Does this happen to anyone else? Is there a name that you are *constantly* being referred by (instead of your real name)?

No, but I'm just checking my own pronunciation of your name...

ann-jell-eek? Or, well, ann-juh-leek. They kind of sound the same the way I say it, when I say it quickly.

My name is Madalyn. I just get irked when people pronounce my name with a 'line' at the end. I also had this teacher in high school that called me Madison the entire time I was in her geometry class. Cringe.

Yes. My name is Tara; pronounced like the plantation in Gone With the Wind. I start getting insulted when I'm continuously called Tar-uh even though I've pronounced my name for them half a gazillion times.

So, I feel your pain. :-P

Hee hee. You said "janky". What a cool word; I think I'll start using it. ;)

I would expect the reverse to happen! (If it was supposed to be Tar-uh, and people kept pronouncing it like GWTW). I"ve only ever heard of one person named Tar-uh.

I had a best friend in high school named Tar-uh. It was very confusing for everyone because we were always together. Eventually we just started answering to either name. ;)

How do you pronounce it? I didn't know there was another pronunciation.

Most people pronounce it Tear (ryhmes with pear) -Uh. But if you pronouce it the old Southern way, "Ta" rhymes with the "Ca" in cat.

I'm perfectly fine with the first version. Just not Tar (rhymes with car) -Uh! :)

In Australia Tara is almost always pronounced Tar (like car)-uh. So don't move here!!

Someone is always going to say my name is Alicia (uh-lee-sha) Alisha (uh-lish-uh) instead of Alyssa (uh-lys-uh). I don't get it. THere isn't an H in my name but they always pron. it like there is.

Oh I forgot, when I worked at my former college's campus cafe, one of the employees would always call me Alison. She was probably 60ish, so I just say her eyes were going bad or something when she read my name tag.

My name is Kiersten. (KEER-stin). I can't even finish the list of names I get called on a daily basis, especially since I'm a bartender and introduce myself to a zillion people every day:

Kersten
Kristen
Krista
Kristina
Kristine
Kristy...

Sometimes I do get people that tell me how pretty my name is and don't understand how anyone could pronounce it incorrectly. (But, that's not what you asked. lol.)

My name is Aubrey and I am often called Audrey by the bank, telemarketers, credit card companies...even people who have just read my name off my ID or whom I have just introduced myself to as "Aubrey" will sometimes call me "Audrey".

I get:
Kim
Kimberly
Amber
Ginger
Timber
Kemper

basically, anything other than my name.. even after i've just introduced myself.. (which pisses me off because it's like they're not paying attention to the words that are coming out of my mouth!)

oh and yeah. My name is Kristin so you'd think people wouldn't have a problem with saying it:
Kirsten
Kiersten
Kristina
Christian
Etc

My name Stephanie has been turned into Bethany a LOT lately, or even just Beth. Maybe they think I'm saying, "Beth," then grunting to myself to make up for the other two syllables. And I've always had a problem with being Tiffany.

The weirdest thing, though, is that when I'm called by a totally random name, it is ALWAYS Jennifer. All my life, I have been called Jennifer by accident, then told, "You just look like a Jennifer." To a lesser extent, I also get Heather a lot, which is also my sister's name, so sometimes my parents would accidentally call me that at home. I can't seem to escape those two names.

My son is 3 months old -- name: Marco. When people meet him for the first tiem they ask "what is his name?" I answer pronouncing his name with a rolled r and an obvious O. And they say "ohhhh MICHAEL!! How cute!" Uh..yea.

I've been called Sarah or Sam before, which I can kind of understand [short name starting with S] but still a bit odd.

My given name gets mispronounced too, the second syllable as a zuh instead of suh. My great grandfather did all the time, so I quite like it as a reminder of him. A lot of other older people do it fairly consistently too, so it's more a variant really.

My last name is phonetic, and not even that uncommon a name, but has been mistaken for everything even remotley close. So I always automatically spell that out.

I'm Sarah. You'd think it'd be a pretty easy name, but as a secretary, I'm on the phone a lot and I'm constantly mistaken for Tara, Darrah, Farrah, Sharon (wtf), Susan (seriously wtf), Laura, Lauren (come on now, this is getting ridiculous), Shari, or any other name with an "ar" sound in it. It's not like I mumble when I speak or anything. Sometimes I just say, yes when they ask me if my name is something other than Sarah. It's just easier.

My name is Jessica nn Jessie...

I get called the following (or have been called in the past):

Katie
Elizabeth
Betty
Jennifer
Jenn

Lol...the only thing I think is cool is that my great-grandmother, whom I look exactly like, was Elizabeth nn Betty. None of the people who called me that name would have known that.

I know it is annoying!

I just get a zillion variations of Elizabeth. I've gotten Bess, Betsy, Betty, Beth, Liz, Lizzy, Libby, Elsbet, and Elisabeth (only different on paper, but still). And Beef, but that's something else again. (An affectionate nickname from my darling friend Heifer. Er...Heather. We were in fourth grade at the time.) I don't particularly mind any of those, but what surprises me is when people call you by a nickname even if you've introduced yourself by your full name and they don't know you all that well.

Angela, while I'm sure it's annoying, is understandable, since it comes from the same root as Angelique, and is more common.

Oh, and the one that really does annoy me--Bethy. Some names just do not fit with a y to make them cutesy!
