I went to the theatres to see the Golden Compass yesterday, and knowing me, I found another name that intrigues me slightly.

What do you guys think of the name Lyra? I think I like it more in theory, than in actuality.

I love it, if pronounced Lee-ra, but I don't like Lie-ra.
I couldn't use it because 'lira' (prn the same as the 1st one) used to be the italian currency before euros, and it would be silly.

However, truth be told, Marco and Franco are very common italian male names and also the names for german, french and swiss currencies.

I think it's a pretty name, I probably wouldn't use it though.

When I read the book I pronounced it Lee-ra, and I think that way it's really beautiful. I haven't seen the movie yet but it's pronounced Lye-ra right? If so, I don't like it pronounced that way.

I like Lyra when it's pronounced either Lee-ra or Lyr-a, with 'lyr' as in 'lyric' =)

I pronounced it like that when I read the books too! I've never met anyone else who did, I'm glad I'm not the only one!

I really like it when it's pronounced that way, but Lye-ra is actually beginning to grow on me too.

I adore it, mostly because of the character, actually.
The only thing that bothers me is the scene in The Amber Spyglass, where the harpy screams "Liar! Lyra!" and they end up indistinguishable.

Honestly, the name has grown on me.

My friend named her daughter Lyra 18 months ago, not knowing her name would become pop culture.

She named her after the constallation (she had read the books too)

I'd had it on my list because of the Northern Lights character anyway, so I was very happy when she chose it after Lyra spent 24hours as baby Ava. (I bit my tongue as I thought it was going to sky rocket, and it did!)

I love the name. I put it on my list after researching astronomy related names. I've never read the books, or even heard of them before I saw them mentioned in this community. Hopefully by the time I have a daughter the book connect will have faded.

I had the same thoughts about the pronunciation.

And at least no one is out there calling their kid "Euro"... yet. ;)

in english, yes, it's marks and franks :)
oh right, so in english too they're both currencies and names!
Hadn't thought of it! haha

the italian names, however, are Marco and Franco, while 'il marco' and 'il franco' (marchi and franchi plural) are the currencies

hehe come to think of it, there are few rare old ladies in Italy called Europa (Europe in italian). But Eurocent would be too much :P Although it matches Millicent hahaha

Oh I see, well I learnt something new!

I doubt it would matter anymore though, considering France, germany and Italy now use the Euro.
Most kids growing up now would never have heard of the old currency.

I've never liked it, the spelling is too close to lycra for me, and I just don't like the way the name sounds.

Not to offend any GC fans, but I used to like that name until I watched the movie and listened to the credits song at the end. The song kind of turned me off to the name.

If Lyra is pronounced "LEER-uh," it makes me think of Italian money, so I don't really like it as a name. "LIE-ruh" is the only other pronunciation I can think of, and I don't like that one, either.
