I met two sixteen year old girls yesterday who were friends.

Their names...

Gloria and Molly

it got me thinking. Which is better...to have a name that many people consider to sound old (like Gloria) or to have a name that many people thing sounds young (like Molly)

I'd say Gloria/older sounding name is better...but give it a few decades and Molly will be the 'older sounding' one

I actually still consider Molly older-sounding. When I hear the name, I think of an old Irish washing woman from maybe the late 19th century.

That's a tough question, though. I'd probably rather have a younger-sounding name, personally, because I'm rather bookish and dorky and if my name were something like Mildred or Bertha, I'd probably have fallen prey to even more jokes in school.

I like the idea of having names that sound 'old.' I think, to me anyway, old names sound really cute on little kids (ie, I know an 8-year-old named Harriet and it's ADORABLE), but 'young' names don't sound as cute on 80 year olds (I can just picture Little Madyssin when she's 86 and in the nursing home...ARGH).

I prefer older; sounds more elegant and professional, which serves you well in later life. And the way trends go it'll eventually come back into style.
I'm not that keen on Gloria itself, but Glory is cute as a nickname.

Molly always makes me think of Molly Ringwald, and I love her, so I love the name. I don't really like old-sounding names like Gloria.

Gloria is a bad name in my family (i cannot even speak the name around my mother) so to me Gloria is a horrible horrible name. I'm not a fan of Molly either but in this instance Molly all the way.

I think the best thing to do is to find an oldish sounding name with a young nickname so the person can chose what they go by as they get older!!

I prefer older sounding names, but in this example I prefer Molly over Gloria.
