So Im wondering what you all think about naming children after celebrities?

I know a woman who had a child last year and named her Shakira, this womans 17 year old daughter will be giving birth to a little girl soon, she says shes naming her Aaliyah, I also know another girl thats gaving birth soon and naming her daughter Kaaliyah, Another friend had a son and named him Zane, after the not so popular rapper "Lil'Zane"

I just dont understand why? I mean, some celeb names are nice, but I dont get why you would name a child after a celeb really, WDYT?

I think it's different if your name isn't obvious, though. For instance, the name Lisa isn't going to make people think, "Oh, she was named after Lisa Marie Presley." But if your name was Madonna, or Elton, people would ALL THE TIME be like, "Oh, were your parents big Madonna/Elton John fans?" (Um, I hope nobody named their kids after them, though, haha)

Oh, I don't think there's anything wrong with Madonna's name itself (although I'm not really a fan), it's just that she's not necessarily someone you'd want to name your child after. All I meant was that Lisa doesn't make people automatically think specific celebrities; Madonna does.

Very true, lol. I didn't even think of Paris; I'm behind on the pop culture times (despite only being 20, hahaha), so I generally go for the 80s/early 90s references;)

Naming your kid AFTER Brittney Spears: definitely worse.

Naming your kid Brittney or Madonna: Madonna is worse. I think Madonna is more easily recognized as THAT Madonna, where as there are about eight gazillion Brittneys in the world. I don't automatically think of Brittney Spears when I hear the name, whereas I DO think of THE Madonna when I hear that name.

I think any name where you can automatically figure out who they're 'named after' can be kind of sucky, regardless of what kind of person they are.

I like Aaliyah as a name, but not because of the singer. I don't really find anything wrong with naming a kid after someone famous. I wouldn't, but some people like to.

I knew a girl named Alea, and it was pronounced the same way. I like that, but Aaliyah always seems like a "trendy" spelling to me, even though I don't think it actually is.

I kind of like Alea actually. Weird. I've always disliked Aaliyah.

Aaliyah is actually Arabic and quite ancient, I believe. But yeah, the spelling can be a bit off-putting at first. Comes from the name Aali, which means exalted.

Well it depends..are they naming their children after celebs in order to honour that celebrity? Or is it like they heard the name on the celebrity and went 'wow that's a cool name, I'm going to use it for my kid.' Because to me I think there is a big difference.

My mom chose my name the 'wow that's a cool name, I'm going to use it for my kid' way, but it was a pretty common name (she had just never heard it before) and she spelled it differently than the celebrity.

My name is Karlie, and the celebrity was Carly Simon.

My mom did the, "Wow, that's a cool name, I'm going to use it for my kid" thing. Saw a movie once, thought the actress's name was beautiful, and stuck it on me. If I had been a boy, I would've been named in honor of a celebrity, though--Paul after the Beatle.

My dad wanted to name me "Loretta Lynn," though. I'm not joking. They argued over it in the delivery room. I'm so glad Mom talked him out of that.

I guess it depends on the celebrity and why that person is choosing that particular celebrity to name their kid after...or something.

Ehh..if it's more of a common name, I don't think it's a big deal, like say James after James Dean. But if it's a really different name like some of the ones you mentioned, I think I'd use it for a middle name instead. For example, I love River Phoenix and would consider using River as a middle name, but never a first.

My middle name was based of a celebrity's child. Some soap opera star from As the World Turns was having a baby at the same time as my mom and they wanted to see what she named her baby. She had a boy named Cory so my middle name became Courtney.

Not that close, but you get the picture.

I originally saw Lyra on a baby name site. Is His Dark Materials very popular?

Tara, after a local band, "Tara and the Paraphenalias". They played at my parents wedding... and judging by the video, she looked really stoned.

My aunt ALMOST called my cousin Billie Jean, after the Michael Jackson song, which was at its peak when my aunt was pregnant.
That was a close one.

My cousin is named Demi. She's soo cute. Her brother's name is Carter.

We weren't directly named after celebrities, or intentionally, but I'm sure Patrick Roy and Courtney Love had something to do with mine and my brother's names. And Rachel from friends for my sister.

I think it's alright, as long as the name isn't completely obvious.
For example, I don't think the name Isla is too obvious (at least I hope not) but Miley or Angelina might be.

I can't see myself naming a child strictly after a celebrity. First of all, I really couldn't care less about them...they put their pants on the same why that I do. And secondly, what if the person I named my kid after became (or already was) a complete loser and one of the most hated celebs on planet earth? It could happen. Not risking it.

I like the name Carver, as a middle name, after Raymond Carver. But I think there's a huge difference between giving your child a middle name after your favorite author, and naming your child Michael Jordan LASTNAME. One is classy; the other is a little too obvious.

But maybe I'm just biased because I like the idea of middle names after people I respect -- family, friends, and yes, some famous people.

Well first of all I like the names Aaliyah and Zane which are both legitimate Hebrew names. Aaliyah used to be my favourite name for awhile but hubby convinced me it would be weird to name your kid after something that happens constantly in synagogue (if you are asked to go up and read the Torah, that means you are given an aaliyah. It also is the term for moving to Israel. It means "to ascend").

But yeah if people are saying I am naming my kid after such and such a celebrity purely because it is their name and not because I love the meaning or heritage or anything. I guess that is kind of odd.

LOL at my little cousin's birthday party, one of the kids there was named Omarion... and he's pale with flaming red hair, it really didn't suit him... but his mother loves Omarion.

I just wonder where the fathers are when the mothers are naming these kids lmao

one of my only set-in-stone names is Lennon. I will definitely be naming my first girl Lennon, after John Lennon.
I think there are times its appropriate and times its not appropriate.
