What do you guys think of the name Andrew with the nickname Ender?
I love the Ender's Game association, as that is my favorite book, but I wouldn't want to name a kid AFTER Andrew "Ender" Wiggin (but again, I don't plan on having kids any time soon).
I love the name Andrew without any nicknames, but I dislike the nicknames Andy and Drew, and I wonder if those names would come naturally from the name Andrew. I do like Ender though. My association isn't with the word at all, like, I don't think "Finisher", I think Ender's Game.
Also, do you think Andrew will be dated in 10 years? It's always been a pretty popular name, in the top 100 for as long as the SSA list goes back, but its spiked to the top 10 in the last 20 years.

I don't think Andrew will be dated, either. It's always been a pretty popular name and it seems like the type that will stick around for a while, if not in the top 10 than at least pretty high up. If it had gone from being #357 to #5 in less than four or five years, I'd say it was trendy, but I think it's just more classic/timeless/popular (pick your adjective) like William, Jack, etc. than it is trendy like Aidan or Dylan.

Besides, Ender is one of those cool nicknames.
This response got really long.

I got into it because an online friend I had in high school was obsessed with it. For the first month or two that we talked, he went by Ender Wiggin. He even had a website, "Ender's Flame," which was a tribute to an actress he had a big crush on. Never having heard of the series, I thought that was actually his name. One day, when I told him how cool I thought his name was, he said, "I probably should have mentioned before now that my name is actually Amir. Yep. Sorry." But! He introduced me to the series and I fell in love (with it, not him). We still talk sometimes, ten years later, and I still think of him as Ender. He's a really awesome guy, so I have really good associations with that name.
After all that, I guess I'm just saying...my vote is yes.
As for Andrew being dated, I don't think it'll be an issue. It's been used so steadily for so long, I think it's timeless.

Ender is a nickname that will make 90% of people go "huh?"
If you don't like Andy or Drew, don't use Andrew. Because someone's going to use one of those someday. Probably multiple people. And you won't be able to control it after a certain point, especially if he doesn't mind.

And I would try to preempt the Andy/Drew nicknames with the nickname Ender. Kind of like how you wouldn't really call a person who introduces themself as "Libby", "Beth" or "Betsy". If HE liked Andy or Drew, obviously, more power to him I wouldn't be able to change that, and maybe because he liked them I would like them more. But he'd have to really loathe the nickname Ender, most people don't really ditch their nicknames (unless they really hate them) until they are in high school, at least, by which time he could choose whatever he liked best.

And you can pre-empt all you like, but when you say "Ender" people will likely think you said "Andrew" anyway. And someone will do Andy or Drew sooner or later, probably sooner, and if you really dislike those names, you'll get annoyed on a regular basis. Just not worth it.

I think it is one of those names that will always fit. I don't think it would ever get dated. My friends are 34 and 27.
I'm not sure about the nickname Ender, just because I can't see how it comes from Andrew (I know there are common letters but it just doesn't seem like a natural nn) That being said I think Ender sounds nice so if that is the nn you wanted to use I say go for it.
