There's a girl in one of my classes named Adawnice. It's pronounced uh-DAWN-iss. And I know it's spelled that way because of the class roster online.

I've never heard the name before, but I thought it was intriguing, so I tried to look it up on baby names sites, but I couldn't find it anywhere; there are only two hits for it on Google.

Has anyone ever heard this name before? Any idea what it means? Just curious, really. I think it's kind of pretty but I'm not in love with it.

Oh, the girl goes by Dawn for short.

Could be a warped variation of Adonis from Greek mythology... though Adonis was a guy...

Adonis was a Greek god born to Myrrha when she was turned into a tree. He was looked after by Persephone in the under world, until he grew up and she became...quite fond of him. He was known for his stunning good looks and, uh, manliness. He is refered to as the God of Desire or the God's gift to women.

This is probably the most inappropriate name in the world for a woman, save Giyntpynys.

Yeah it really reminds me of the very masculine name Adonis too,
it's mind-boggling how they've tried (and failed) to feminise it by sticking dawn and -ice in. At least she can go by Dawn?

On the plus side, thank God Giyntpynys isn't a real name, the way things are going you had me worried!

I dont like the spelling but the nickname Dawn is nice. Alternately if it were on a boy and spelled Adonis I would not like the nn Don, because I pronounce Dawn and Don differently.

When I read that name I see 'A Dawn Ice' but I would probably mistakenly pronounce it Ad-au-nice
