Do you guys have names on your list that YOU say a certain way, but OTHERS say a completely different way? But you love the name too much to take it off, even though you know it's going to be a hassle to keep reminding everyone how to say it?

We're trying to decide if we would ever use Juliana, pronounced our preferred way of yoo-lee-AH-nah. But we're worried that too many people would pronounce it joo-lee-AH-nah, which is a pronunciation I flat-out hate. We've considered Uliana, but I'm not too fond of the spelling -- it's just "okay".

So, anyone else have names like this? I know Sara/Sarah is a very common one. And thoughts on the name Juliana in general? Thoughts on Uliana?

I really like Chaya but I know that every non-Jew or non Hebrew speaker will pronounce it CH-eye-ah or Hi-ya

And there's really no other way to spell that phonetically, because "Hi-YAH!" conjures up pictures of Bruce Lee.

I love Juliana and it is on my list.. but I pronounce it Julie-anna. =/
I probably wouldn't use it myself though because of the pronouncation problem.
I like the spelling Uliana for the way you want it pronounced, though.

For Uliana, I'd pronounce it (not knowing any better) ooh-li-AH-na. What about Yuliana?

I like that spelling!

I second the liking of "Yuliana" as an alternative.

that's what I was going to suggest too ;)

I second Yuliana, it makes the most sense to me and I say it exaclty how you want Juliana to be pronounced.

I agree, Yuliana looks the best and seems to fit right.

I don't really like the look of Uliana. It looks like a female body part to me...and I think I might pronounce it Ooh-li-ana (like the first sound in Uma). I do like your favored pronounciation, but I think every one will say Joo-li-ana. I know I would until corrected. Where do you live? That might make a big difference.

I like Juliana with the J pronounced; I'm not a fan of yoo-lee-ah-nah.

The only one I worry about people mispronouncing is Madeline/Madeleine. I say Madeline with the -LINE pronunciation, and Madeleine not like -LYN, but more like -LEN.

my niece is Adrianna, pronounced adri-ANN-uh, but almost everyone (including her father!) pronounce it adri-AHN-uh, which my sister hates :P

Why not Yulianna if you want that pronunciation?

About the list, yep. I just posted it actually! My fiance and I love Mathilde, but I worried no one would say it right, so I posted it in this community and my suspicions were largely confirmed. :( I can't decide if we still want to go ahead with that spelling, or give in and spell it Matilda so she doesn't have to spell her name to every single person she meets.
