So, what exactly would all of y'all consider to be "filler" middle names? For my generation, at least (I was born in 1989), the most common middle names seemed to be:

Boys - James, Michael
Girls - Ann(e), Elizabeth, Jane, Leigh, Lynn(e), Marie, Nicole

I feel like Leigh and Lynn, particularly, have lost a lot of appeal over the years, but the rest seem to still be going strong. I must admit, though, that I really like Jane for a middle name, despite its filler status.

So, am I forgetting anything? Have any new names gained filler status over the past eighteen years?

ETA - I forgot about Renée for a girl.

Jane, Marie and Elizabeth. There are so many girls I know with those middle names.

For boys, I don't know. Most guys I know have some sort of surname as their middle name, or a family name.

Grace is big for girls in the middle.

Definitely. So many girls I know have Grace as a middle mane.

How about Rose (post "Titanic") and Grace?

Rose and Marie.
Probably because they flow with ANY first name.
Grace, too; the boys I have known tend to not really have a pattern in the middle name department.

My middle name is Jane and I hate it. I've vowed to give my kids non-filler middle names.

I hate Jane for a few reasons. I think its boring, but I also hate the sound of my first name with Jane. It's also both my sisters middle names and my Mum's and my cousin's. So to me it is just unoriginal.

...Your parents gave all three of their daughters the same middle name?

Weird!

Michelle seems to be pretty common.

That's mine.

I actually don't know anyone with the mns Jane or Grace. Mind you, I was born in 1975. Marie, Elizabeth, LYNN (everyone was a Lynn), and Nicole. I also knew a couple of Roses.

I don't really think of many names as 'filler' names.

These names generally sound nice with anything...and they are definintely better than one of those creative bullshit names, so I would still use them even if they are widely considered to be names you use because you aren't bothered to think of something different.

I like the names Marie, Anne, Jane and Elizabeth.
I'd consider them classic, not 'fillers'.

I don't know that I consider any name to be anything other than a "filler" middle name, unless it's used for a reason -- a family name, to honor someone, etc. The definition of it for me is a name you use because it sounds good, so that's...everything. And the names that might be filler for one person to use (because they don't have any reason to except "they sound good") aren't filler for another (maybe Anne is for their mother, or something).

Lynn, Jean, Ann, Renee, Elizabeth, Grace, Leigh/Lee, Rose.

Also Marie, which one of my middle names, but I don't consider it a filler name in my case because it was my great grandmother's name.

Louise was definitely a filler middle name for my age group (at least in England anyway)

Lee, Marie & Elizabeth.
I like Marie though.

I reckon about half the girls I know of my age (25) have the middle name Jane.

it kills me that James is a filler name, honestly. because i know girls whose sons have the middle name because "i couldn't think of anything else!"... while my son has it because it's in honor of his great grandfather. we could have went with my grandfather's middle name (Frances), but my g-pa HATES the name, so that would not have been a very good way to honor him hahaha.

but anyway...
i graduated in 2003, if i go through my yearbook, out of all the girls in my class, the most popular middle names are Lee/Leigh, Marie, Ann(e) or Lynn(e) as middle names. i honestly think only 3 out of about 85-90 girls who had different middle names- two had Michelle, one had Elizabeth.

Only one I would think of for girls that hasn't already been said is May/Mae.
John and Alexander for boys.

Filler names like Ann, Marie and Lynn usually seem to be used to honor a famliy member. Filler names now like Grace, Rose and Jane seem to be used because they are just popular. I do, however like Jane as a middle name, because it is short and sweet and balances out some of the more flowery first names.
