I found an interesting, Dutch site about popular Dutch names. One of the list on that site is a list of the most popular unisex names.
There are some really interesting choices there. Also, no, those names are not short for anything, we don't do the whole name-your-kid-something-long-and-then-give-it-a-nickname thing here. That is, most people don't do that.

My hubby is dutch :)(lived in Rotterdam went to the HR& O no more O I think it's just the HR now also in Papendrecht, and Moordrecht. He was born in Gouda though)

There are 26 letter in the alphabet.. My hubby told me that the IJ is considered another letter.. making it 27..

I've been told 'ij' is similar to 'eye-ah', I knew this girl named Marije and she pronounced it just like Mariah Carey :P

My cousin had a boy recently and she named him Dominic!

And my sister is seriously considering Frédérique for a girl, if she ever has children. I think it's actually very nice.
Also, for the anime fans, Sailor Uranus's French name in the manga is Frédéric.
