Do you think naming a twin Thomas/Tamsin/Thomasina is appropriate or not? (the names mean 'twin')
On the other hand, does it make sense to name a singleton that?(not counting use as family name)

Actually, I didn't know 'Thomas' and 'Tamsin' mean twin until now...and since I think most people won't know that that's their meaning, I'd say you could use it, both for a twin and for a single child ;)

I don't think it would be inappropriate to name a twin Thomas, but then as a name geek, I'd feel obligated to give the other a similarly-themed name, and I don't want to name a child, say, Gemini.

I don't think it would present a problem to name a singleton that, either, because most people would never know anyway. Plus, I love some number-related names, like Quentin and Tessa, but I wouldn't wait around for a fifth child to name them that. So for me at least, the meaning doesn't matter.

my FIL is Thomas and has an identical twin. his brother is Timothy. Tom and Tim. I think THAT is worse than the meaning of Thomas.

Well, there are people walking around with very pretty names that mean pain and blindness and such. I do like it when a name's meaning has some significance, but I don't think it matters, especially with a common name like Thomas.

I don't think it's inappropriate.
My father's name is Thomas, and I was called Tamsin, and this was completely by accident.

Plus, with my first and middle name, my name means twin girl and I was born with no other brothers and sisters coming out beside me!

In this situation, I don't think the meaning of Thomas is well-known enough to make it poor taste.
