babynames | (no subject)

I love the name Mabyn, but no one else I know seems to like it, including my partner. He says it sounds too much like Mabel. I admit I thought it was sort of strange the first time I heard it, but for some reason it really grew on me. What do you think of it?

(It's Welsh for "ever young" btw)

Also...I love the German name Mareike (Muh-RYE-kuh), but I've googled and am having trouble finding a meaning for it. The closest I've found said it was a pet name for Maria/Mary/etc but that's all I've found. Anyone else know, or know where I could find out? It was the name of a pen pal of mine when I was in middle school (over 10 years ago) but I've loved it ever since, and have a lot of German in me so it wouldn't be TOO stupid to use it.

Also...can you get any cute nicknames out of it? I can't think of any. Not necessarily one she'd use enough to write down, but just a name you'd call her around the house. Like my parents always called me Rach, but it wasn't an official nickname like Susie or Katie or something that I would use for anything, just a pet name.

Mareike sounds similar to Marika

Yeah with English pronunciation...but in German it wouldn't be the same. Marika would be pronounced Ma-REE-ka whereas they pronounce Mareike Ma-RYE-ka.

I always liked "Mabon." Never seen "Mabyn" before, but it's just as nice. :)
Mareike reminds me of Marika, which I think is the Polish diminutive of Mary..? Not 100% sure on that one. It's a pretty name, but not one I know anything about, sorry.

mareike reminds me of meike which is a popular german name. spelled differently, it is mieke, which is dutch. anyway, it looks like they're just "pet names" of maria too. but that could be a possible nickname.

also, another nickname could be rei ("rye"). that would kind of be cute, actually.

I like Mareike. I couldn't find anything other than it being a pet form of Mary, but that's not a bad thing. It's still a nice name. As for nicknames, how about -

Mareike is nice. It reminds me of an old friend of mine named Meika (MEE-ka).

i went to school with a girl named Marieke (who was german). i'll be having my high school reunion in two weeks and if you don't have an answer by then, i'll ask her for the meaning.

oh, and about half our classmates just called her "mikey" for simplicity purposes. she never seemed to mind.

mare? that's probably what I'd end up calling her, unofficially... it changes the vowel sound a bit but it's better than "muh".

I like Mabyn. It reminds me of Maren/Maryn, which I like (I think it's Scottish - I knew 2 girls in high school with that name). I like Mareike, too.
