awwww, poo.....
Oct. 1st, 2007 01:51 pmSo, I'm due in 3 weeks (probably less) and I was talking about names on a due date community.
It got me thinking about the name thing pretty hard, and I was all excited because I thought I'd settled on the name combos that really made me happy. My husband and I have only really discussed the name thing a couple of times and haven't managed to agree on anything much... but I think he's going to leave it up to me, with veto power if I pick something he really hates.
I was in bed later and it occurred to me then that the initials on those name combos that I liked are totally, utterly unacceptable.
S.H.T.
argh.
Now I have to either sacrifice the middle names, or come up with a new first name (the one I picked is unisex, with different middle names for boy/girl).

Date: 2007-10-01 07:43 pm (UTC)That's true, but most backpacks for little/elementary school-age kids have their initials on them. I always wanted my backpacks to have my initials. My friend in first grade used to get teased about her initials spelling JAM, and that's not even, like, a bad thing. It's just jam. But it was still pretty embarrassing for her.
However, at that age I didn't even know the word "shit", so who knows if they'd see anything in "SHT" anyway. My main point is that it isn't a totally outlandish worry--but it's also not something to give up a really good name over.

Date: 2007-10-01 09:37 pm (UTC)Mine aren't bad... JMP is definitely word-making, but nothing to tease about. (maiden name)
Hubby's are MET, which is a word, but no big deal.
I don't know... I'm contemplating adding another name, and just going with the 4-name route instead of 3.
Or I could just tell hubby I'm giving the kid my last name instead! ;D

Date: 2007-10-01 07:28 pm (UTC)If you absolutely love the names you have picked out, then go for it. I don't think one day the kids will be sitting in class, putting their initals together and then laughing at a funny result.

Date: 2007-10-01 07:38 pm (UTC)Even then initials are pretty overrated, for all my years of name geekdom I can only think of a couple of times when initials have ever been noted, if they make for a nickname.
So either way those seem totally fine to me. Only thought of it because you discussed it in that context, then gave it some thought. It's really not that obvious.

Date: 2007-10-01 07:40 pm (UTC)SHT is not bad, really. and if you are in the habit of monogramming, it's sTh. and as far as the kids go, it's just ST.

Date: 2007-10-01 09:41 pm (UTC)I'm thinking of maybe adding another name in there, the one the soon-to-be big sister picked out.
Most folks I know that have done the 4-name thing, though, have done it for all their kids, not just one. heheh

Date: 2007-10-01 07:42 pm (UTC)What are the names you picked out?

Date: 2007-10-01 09:44 pm (UTC)Sheridan Hope T_____ (girl)
Sheridan Hart T_____ (boy) Hart is my dad's middle name as well as his dad's and grandad's, btw.
The last name is very common, two-syllables.

Date: 2007-10-01 09:48 pm (UTC)Now, I did say that we couldn't name a boy after him because then the kid would be MT the 5th.... or Empty the Fifth. And, well, as we have long lines of alcoholics on both sides, I didn't want to tempt fate. ;D

Date: 2007-10-02 10:57 am (UTC)It only caused one problem, ever, and even that was short and funny: I'd initialled a note to my supervisor (during a stint as hotel receptionist). She thought the note referred to a TV and went looking for broken TVs in the hotel before finally asking me what on earth was the matter. We chuckled; the end.
I did NOT change my last name when I got married, because I happen to like my name. It is, by definition, my name.
SHT doesn't even MEAN anything. You'd have to add a letter! If you don't want to use it, don't, but seriously: your kids will survive.
