A brother of an acquaintance is called Jethro. I used to like it, but I'm not so fond of it anymore. He pronounced it Yay-tro by the way.

I like Dante better when it's spelled right. Logan Alexander could definitely be worse, although I'd probably switch the names; I like Alex a lot better than Logan. Beth and Abigail are two of my favorite names.

I'm confused by the responses that Dontae isn't okay but Dante is. Are y'all pronouncing them the same? To me, the A in Dante is NOT pronounced the same as an O.

... but maybe it's a regional thing?

Wow. I pronounce Dante more like the original Italian, I guess, so that the first A is an "ah" sound, not an O. And the E would be a bit more clipped than the "ay" sound, rather like a Spanish E.

Dontae, I agree, is probably phonetic for Americans.

I think we're only pronouncing Dante a LITTLE bit different, because "ah" and the "o" in Don are only a little different to me, haha. Like, they sound almost exactly the same when I say them Dahn-te' and Don-te'. And the ay and e' sound are almost exactly the same to me, too (my friend's last name ends in the e' sound, and it's pronounced -ay).

Or are you saying the first syllable of Dante more like the boy's name Dan?

I think we're both thinking of the same sound, but you're right: for you, they're nearly the same. Would you say the word "mall" (as in shopping mall) the same as "moll" (as in gangster's moll, or first syllable of Molly)? If so, then that's it. I wouldn't, but my vowels tend to be more separated, since I had such a migratory childhood and therefore HAD to learn about 3508750 ways to say each vowel! Heheh.
