I think it's popular, but for a reason. It's like Kate or Emily; they're popular, but still not...trendy. You know what I mean?

That said, I prefer it as a nickname, because I think it sounds more like a childish name. I mean, it could work on an adult, but I think it sounds like a little kid name. Maybe as a nickname for Eleanor or Elisabeth?

Emily is insanely trendy. Look at its stats on NameVoyager (http://www.babynamewizard.com/namevoyager/lnv0105.html). I'm not saying it has no reason to be popular, but it's hardly a classic name (like the names for which Kate is a nickname).

It's an old name, it's been around since the middle ages, and it was the name of some pretty notable people... Emily Bronte, for example? Emily Dickinson?

It's not a question of whether Emily Dickinson's poems are crappy. You were just saying in another comment that some people call all the names they like classics, whether they are or not. You're doing exactly the same thing. Names you like are classics, names you don't aren't. :P

Yes, it is extremely popular. I like the association with Ella Fitzgerald, but other than that I find it sounds rather insubstantial.

Not only is Ella popular, but Ellie, Eliana, Elliana, Elaina, and Elena are all shooting up the charts too. It's just a super trendy sound, and the nn Ellie is super trendy.

I honestly love the name Ella, have adored it since the first time I heard it. I probably won't use it now because of its popularity, but I don't look at little girls named Ella and think, "What a poor, unoriginal choice on the parents' part!"--I think, wow, what a pretty name.

My name is Ella! I've only ever met one little girl called Ella, dispite it's growing popularity. I was named after Ella Fitzgerald nearly 19 years ago, and my sister was samed Sarah, after Sarah Vaughn. I was actually VERY lucky (at least I think) that I didn't end up being Etta.

I used to love the name Ella but it's so popular now that I'm kind of sick of it. It's a cute name, but I'm just kind of tired of it, and probably wouldn't use it. But I LOVE the name Elle, so I hope that doesn't become as popular too.

i absolutely love Ella, it's so pretty.
My sister says it sounds "too old fashioned" which I don't agree with.
I know of 3 little Ella's and i don't think i'll ever get sick of hearing it either.

I think it's too popular for me and I don't even care for it that much....yet I adore Elle. Weird huh? One letter/syllable makes a difference in that instance.
