[identity profile] pro-act-ive.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
I recently gave birth to a little boy whom we named after his father and great-grandfather, Richard Houston Ray III. I had originally intended on calling him Houston to avoid confusion with his daddy, but that doesn't work for his dad because his uncle was named Houston and had a very traumatic death.

Any suggestions for a nickname? (Not DICK :)

Rick or Rich?

I also second the nickname of Hugh that [livejournal.com profile] gladly_beyond suggested. It's a really cute name and it works well as a nn for Houston without actually calling him Houston.

yes, I got a hint from the similarity to the word 'tre' which is 3 in italian :) 'trois' is 3 in french

Awesome. I'm French, but I speak mostly Canadian French or Québécois French as well as English obviously. :)

Trip.

I absolutely love that nickname for a third in a series. "Triple," get it? But, seriously, it's a good solid nickname that they can grow up into as well.

Other ideas might be Rick, Richie, Ray, Ron, JR (may be a bit too southern), RJ (Richard Jr.; also a bit southern), Hugh, Sonny, Tony, Buddy.

I think that this is the perfect way to come up with a cute and original name for a child. That's how I plan on nicknaming my future children, if I feel the need to do so.

my 2nd daughter had skinny looking legs when she was born that she would scrunch up all frog-like and thus became "Froggie". my husband HATES it. lol

my first is "Muchie" which is kind of a long story but boils down to the morphine they gave me after my c-section. lol

anyway, point being, neither nickname has much to do with their given name but we're down with that whole made up for personal reasons nicknaming as well. :)

Call him "Ray" :)

I have a coworker who is a III. He's called Tres, not the French "Treh" but the Spanish "Trehss".

My younger son is a Richard III and we call him RJ. However, his middle name starts with a J so coming up with RJ was just a given.

I vote for Hugh or Trey as well. Trip is ok but makes me laugh a little for some reason.

(I once said that if I ever had a child named Richard, I'd called him 'Ari', like R-y. :D)
