How do you guys feel about naming your child after a person(s) who have inspired you? A teacher, a family member, a friend, etc.

Well, I've always been a huge believer in doing so -- especially with the people in my life -- but I'm in a bit of a dilemma. The hubby and I are trying to conceive again, and since he had the "privilege" of naming our current daughter (Emily May -- after his best friend and his mother), I get to be the deciding factor this time around. But all of the people I want to name my children after... unfortunately, don't have any of my favorite names.

The people are:
Taryn Lawson
Erica Marie
Kimberly Jane
Sara Lynn
Andrew James
John Alexander
Douglas Ryan
Trent Lane

The only combo of those names that I like in the tiniest bit is John Douglas or Douglas John. Stretching it a bit, I like Sara Jean (a lot). I also got the idea from a friend to do a sort of acronym... but nothing has really come up that I like. I like old-fashioned, long names. Any ideas?

I love it. Names with emotional resonance have so much more significance than ones that just sound nice. Can you imagine how amazing you'd feel if someone named a child after you? What a gift you are giving these people.

Rather than using a name exactly the way it is, you could use a form from a different language, as long as it's still recognizable. Marie is probably going to be your best bet there - you could do Mary, Maria, Marika, Maritza, Mariana, Maribel, Mariel,... the list goes on and on.

Look at different forms of the name in different languages, or perhaps one of their last names would make a good first name?

To answer your question I think honoring someone this way is wonderful and I plan to do it myself :)

Great! I really like Finn and Carter. They are two of my favorite names! I just realized you could use Ben as a nn for Bennett too - that makes me like it as well. :)

If you like old fashioned, long names, you could use Theresa as a combination of Taryn and Sara.

I lovelovelove Ryan for a boy!
Also Alexander and Trent!

Kimberly is also very cute, and the 80's are far enough to drop the connection :P Then I like Marie and Lane for a girl

Little trivia: Trent Lane is Jane Lane's brother in Daria, the MTV cartoon :P Daria has a crush on him.

I like naming a kid after an inspiring person =)

Doing an acronym could work, although it's not really naming someone after someone, I think. And besides, that way you can't get those long names you like ;)

Can't you just throw some names together? So, not acronyms, but just...mix them up? Like Marie & Andrew, make Marian out of it, or something (bad example, but now you know what I mean =P)
Taryn & Sara = Tara
Marie & Lynn = Marlyn
etc.
Again...it's hard to get long names this way. I agree with the person above who suggested looking up names in different languages...that's a great idea!

I like how Sara(h) Jane sounds, but that's mostly because it's my cousin's nickname (her actual name is Sarah Dian). My high school best friend had a younger sister named Jane Marie, so I think that sounds good together, too.

What about Marilynn (comination of Marie and Lynn)?

I like Douglas John better than John Douglas, but that's just me.
