[identity profile] unbakedbrownie.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
Today I was watching a slew of programs that TLC was running. They were all about multiple child households. We're talking the smallest one was 13 kids! On that particular show, there were three kids whose names made me raise my eyebrow just a little bit. o_O

Keilah - pronounced as Kayla
Josiah - pronounced as Joes-eye-uh
Havilah - pronounced as Have-ih-la

I saw that episode

Havilah is horrible. The others I can tolerate. I feel like Havilah got the worst name out of all of them...and she is one of the babys too right?

it just sounds made up

Josiah is a biblical name. It's been around for hundreds of years and has had a bit of a revival lately.

wow Havilah is pretty hardcore obscurely biblical.
Josiah I like though.

Havilah is definitely not made up.
Did you hear Jedediah? That's also biblical. The bible has some pretty creative names. I have a dear friend named Nehemiah.

Not fond of the other two, but my son's name is Josiah. I love it, obviously.

Um...Josiah is actually a pretty traditional name, lol. Eyebrow agreed on the other two, though.

I know a girl named Havilah, he is one of ten kids. I actually think it is really pretty, I never knew it was biblical though.

Yeah, all those names are bad.

I hate Josiah, Jedidiah, Jeremiah, etc. Basically, I hate any name that comes from the bible.

Why? That excludes the majority of the names in the western world.

Well, I wouldn't ever use a biblical name because I'm not Christian. Most of them are overused horribly. The ones that aren't overused are obviously from the bible (there is no subtlety in them)

You'd be hard pressed to find a name that didn't have Christian connotations, unless it's
a) From another religion
b) From an pre-Christian culture (Celtic, Roman, Indian)
And even then, there are tons of saints that use various names. Striking something out because of the religion (especially one so wide-spread as Christianity) just sounds ridiclous.

I'm not as concerned about names that have christian connections (such as various saints), I'm talking about names that are literally found in the bible. (i.e. Michael, James, Mary, etc.)

But they're such timeless, classic names! Mary especially...I'm not a big fan of Michael. But stuff like Rachel, Rebecca, Hannah, James, Peter, Gabriel, Joshua, Joseph and so on and so forth. And to be honest, names like Mary or Elizabeth aren't that overused anymore because people are opting for more disgustingly trendy names like Aidan and MacKenzie.

...ahem. Apologies. It's just that I am on a personal crusade for sensible names.
