I agree. I used to work in a bank where we had a male customer named Meredith. Every time we had a new teller come aboard, they'd look at his paycheck and give it back to him and say, "I'm sorry, sir, I can't cash your wife's paycheck without her being present." He'd get all testy and say, "*I* am Meredith."
We also had a male customer named Dana, and much the same happened with him - but he was nicer about it.
It is a guy's name, but it's pretty much gone over 100%. It would make his life very difficult. Then again, I know a male Ashley who carries it off pretty well.
You don't happen to be a Stargate:Atlantis fan, by any chance?
Devon is actually more popular anyway as a boys name. It ranked 197 in 2006 as a male name, and didnt even make the top 1000 as a girls name.. That said, i do prefer it (and also Morgan) as a boys name anyway. I prefer Ashley on girls, but i know 2 male Ashley' who pull it off well.
I think things are different in the UK. Over here Morgan is very much a boys' name. Also, all the Merediths I know over here are male, as are all the Ashleys (except one). We don't seem to pick up these naming trends so quickly.
I guess it depends on which part of the UK you live in. I'm in the N.East and know a couple of little girl Morgan's but no males. I also know more female Ashleys than males.
No. Just no. Meredith, is always been a girls name to me. And I've never heard it on a boy. That poor kid would be teased and ridiculed for having a girls name.
It really does depend on the kind of childhood you would want young Meredith to have. That name is way too much of a girls name in this modern era to ever be used on a boy. Granted, in it's native land it is still a male name but unless you live there and would expect the child to live there all of his life, it's really not a good idea.
Meredith as a middle name, though, would be acceptable.
William Meredith Ian Meredith Patrick Meredith Alexander Meredith Andrew Meredith John Meredith Etc.
I don't think it is so bad. I knew a guy named Shannon, which was 100% a girls name to me until I met him. He was really cool, no one teased him and it really fit him.
I do agree with samaside that it makes a nicer middle name. I especailly like Patrick Meredith and John Meredith.
If you're planning on having a kid in the next year or so, I'd steer clear, as I think Meredith is having a huge boom as a female name. But in general, I don't think it would be dooming your child to life-long strife, necessarily. Think about the males you know named Kelly, Ashley, Leslie, Kelsey, Dana, and so forth, and most of them are fine. If you're particularly worried about it, you could give him a middle name that's more commonly masculine or think about initials he could go by--I knew a Kelly who went by KJ instead.
Well, if you're Welsh, the proper way to spell the name is Meredydd. If you're not Welsh I really wouldn't use it as a guy's name as outside of that country people wouldn't understand and he'll be thought to be a girl all his life, IMO.
Meredith is one of my all-time favourite names and i love it on BOTH girls and boys. it's really a timeless name, it sounds good at any age, Meri/Merry is an adorable name for a child, and it sounds very sophisticated on an adult, IMO. i'm very much into the androgynous name thing, too.

Red also works. Meade/Mede could, in a pinch. Middy, Teddy, Meddy, Mitch?
